Facial expression recognition (FER) systems have attracted much research interest in the area of Machine Learning. We designed a large, deep convolutional neural network to classify 40,000 images in the data-set into one of seven categories (disgust, fear, happy, angry, sad, neutral, surprise). In this project, we have designed deep learning Convolution Neural Network (CNN) for facial expression recognition and developed model in Theano and Caffe for training process. The proposed architecture achieves 61% accuracy. This work presents results of accelerated implementation of the CNN with graphic processing units (GPUs). Optimizing Deep CNN is to reduce training time for system.

Because the shallow neural network has limited ability to represent complex functions with limited samples and calculation units, its generalization ability will be limited when it comes to complex classification problems. The essence of deep learning is to learn a nonlinear network structure, to represent input data distributed representation and demonstrate a powerful ability to learn deeper features of data from a small set of samples. In order to realize the accurate classification of expression images under normal conditions, this paper proposes an expression recognition model of improved Visual Geometry Group (VGG) deep convolutional neural network (CNN). Based on the VGG-19, the model optimizes network structure and network parameters. Most expression databases are unable to train the entire network from the start due to lack of sufficient data. This paper uses migration learning techniques to overcome the shortage of image training samples. Shallow CNN, Alex-Net and improved VGG-19 deep CNN are used to train and analyze the facial expression data on the Extended Cohn–Kanade expression database, and compare the experimental results obtained. The experimental results indicate that the improved VGG-19 network model can achieve 96% accuracy in facial expression recognition, which is obviously superior to the results of other network models.

Facial expression recognition computer technology can obtain the emotional information of the person through the expression of the person to judge the state and intention of the person. The article proposes a hybrid model that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and dense SIFT features. This model is used for facial expression recognition. First, the article builds a CNN model and learns the local features of the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth. Then, the article features are sent to the support vector machine (SVM) multiclassifier to obtain the posterior probabilities of various features. Finally, the output result of the model is decided and fused to obtain the final recognition result. The experimental results show that the improved convolutional neural network structure ER2013 and CK+ data sets’ facial expression recognition rate increases by 0.06% and 2.25%, respectively.
