The advantages of fixed-dose drug combinations are often offset by their limitations.1 Nevertheless, in hypertension fixed combinations of a beta blocker and a diuretic are often used for convenience. A combination of atenolol 50mg and nifedipine 20mg is now marketed as Beta-Adalat (Bayer) and Tenif (Stuart) for hypertension resistant to therapy with either component alone. The manufacturers claim improved blood pressure control with one or two tablets once daily and no greater incidence of unwanted effects.
