This volume contains the proceedings of a symposium held in June 1964 to discuss the concept of caries resistance. That the aim of the symposium was accomplished is attested to by the lively and very informative discussions of the leaders in dental research. Some of these newer concepts vary greatly from the traditional beliefs, such as Brudevold's findings that the mechanism of action of fluoride in caries protection is one of facilitative remineralization rather than of a decreased solubility of fluorapatite crystals.
