Abstract A method is described for the quantitative determination of chlorobutanol in milk by gas-liquid chromatography. The cleanup includes isolation of chlorobutanol from milk by steam distillation and extraction with ether. The chlorobutanol is quantitatively determined on a column of 5% Igepal 880 on Gas-Chrom Q with electron capture detection. Recoveries were 87–101% for milk fortified at 0.01–10 ppm levels. Collaborative study is recommended after an intralaboratory study is completed.
