Adhesion and Reliability of Epoxy/Glass Interfaces

The reliability of microelectronic components is profoundly influenced by the fracture resistance of the polymer/inorganic interfaces and by the progressive debonding of these interfaces in aqueous environments. Consequently, fatigue (slow) crack growth in epoxy/glass interfaces bonded with the silane coupling agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APES) was studied under static and cyclic loading at 23°C and in either dry or humid conditions using the double cleavage drilled compression (DCDC) test. Crack growth rates under cyclic loading were significantly greater than under static loading, indicating that stress corrosion effects are negligible and that crack tip plasticity controls cyclic fatigue crack growth at silane (3-APES) bonded epoxy/glass interfaces. After aging at 94°C in water, these silane bonded epoxy/glass interfaces exhibited somewhat greater resistance to cyclic fatigue crack growth than the unaged samples; however, after aging at 98°C in water cyclic fatigue crack growth became cohesive and fractal in nature. Mechanisms for fatigue crack growth at silane (3-APES) bonded epoxy/glass interfaces are discussed.

Fatigue crack growth rates (FCGR) of sensitized austenitic stainless steel (SS) were measured in simulated BWR water at 288 °C using compact tension specimens under different cyclic loading modes, including saw-tooth, trapezoidal and constant loading pattern. This study tested sensitized SS in normal water chemistry (NWC) and hydrogen water chemistry (HWC) respectively, and attempted to clarify the effect of low electrochemical corrosion potential on the FCGR of sensitized stainless steel. Significant environment effects on FCGR of sensitized stainless steel were observed in both water chemistries when compared with air fatigue curve. The pronounced suppression effect of HWC on crack growth in statically sustained load was not observed in cyclic loading condition. ASME curve doesn’t seem to be conservative and could not bound all the FCGR data tested in this study. In contrast, all of the measured FCGR data were bound by the JSME disposition curve. PLEDGE model proposed by General Electric reasonably predicted the FCGR of sensitized SS in NWC, but underestimated the FCGR in HWC. ANL’s superposition model successfully estimated the FCGR measured in both water chemistries. The fractography exhibited transgranular fracture mode during the crack initiation and growth stage. No differences in the appearance of fracture surface were observed in HWC and NWC. Only in very high DO environments, the sensitized 304 SS exhibited the mixed mode of intergranular and transgranular during growth stage.

This paper describes an accepted approach for predicting fatigue crack-growth life in pipelines. Fatigue life is computed as the number of cycles for a crack-like flaw to grow from an initial size to a final critical size. This computation is performed by integrating a fracture-mechanics model for fatigue crack growth. The initial flaw size is estimated either from inspection results or by using fracture mechanics to predict the largest flaw that would have survived a hydrostatic pressure test. The final flaw size is estimated using fracture mechanics. Fracture-mechanics models for computing fatigue crack growth and predicting flaw size are reviewed. The anticipated cyclic loading must be characterized to perform the crack-growth calculations. Typically, cyclic loading histories, such as pressure cycle data, are analyzed and used to estimate future loadings. To utilize the crack-growth models, the cycles in the loading history must be counted. The rainflow cycle counting procedure is used to characterize the loading history and develop a histogram of load range versus number of cycles. This histogram is then used in the fatigue crack-growth analysis. Results of example calculations are discussed to illustrate the procedure and show the effects of periodic hydrostatic testing, threshold stress intensity factor range, and pressure ratio on predicted fatigue crack-growth life.

One of the critical requirements of fatigue crack growth simulation is calculation of the remaining life of a structure under cyclic loading. This paper presents a method which predicts the remaining fatigue life of a part, and gives information on the eventual mode of failure. The path of a growing crack needs to be understood so that informed assessment can be made of the structural consequences of eventual fast growth, and the likelihood of leakage and determination of leakage rates. For these reasons the use of standard handbook solutions for crack growth is generally not adequate, and it is essential to use the real geometry and loading. The reasons for performing such simulation work include preventive investigations performed at the design stage, forensic investigations performed after failure, and sometimes forensic investigations performed during failure-when the results provide input to the planning of remedial work. This paper focuses on the 3D simulation of cracks growing in metal structures exposed to cyclic loading, and explains the techniques which are used. The loading might arise from transients of pressure or other mechanical forces, or might be caused by thermal-stress variations. The simulation starts from an initial crack which can be of any size and orientation. The relevant geometry of the cracked component is modelled, and the loading is identified using one or more load cases together with a load spectrum which shows how the loading cycles. The effects of the crack are determined by calculating stress intensity factors at all positions along the crack front (it would be called the crack tip if the modelling was performed in 2D). The rate and direction of crack growth at each part of the crack front are calculated using one of the available crack growth laws, together with appropriate material properties. The effects of such growth are accumulated over a number of load cycles, and a new crack shape is determined. The process is repeated as required. The use of multi-axial and mixed mode techniques allows the crack to turn as a result of the applied loading, and the resulting crack path is therefore a consequence of both the detail of the geometry and the loading to which the structure is subjected. Gas or other fluid pressures acting on the crack faces can have significant impact, as can the contact between opposing crack faces when a load case causes part of the crack to close.
