Geometric Assistance for the Construction of Non-Polyhedral Solids From Orthographic Views

Abstract As the extensive use of solid models becomes widespread, it is important to have a mechanism by which existing engineering drawings can be converted into solid models. Therefore, a geometric assistant which can aid in the construction of solid models is beneficial. In this paper, we present key operations for a system called the Assistant for the Rapid Construction of Solids (ARCS), that provides this assistance given a set of two orthographic views. ARCS is based on the Visual Reasoning Tutor (VRT), a system we developed that provides users with the geometric framework to build polyhedral solids from their orthographic views. However, the geometric domain of ARCS encompasses non-polyhedral solids with cylindrical and spherical surfaces, such as those found in typical mechanical parts. We have devised the Cylindrical and Spherical Warping operations to create cylindrical and spherical surfaces, which use interactive computer graphics that guide a human user to build non-polyhedral faces of a solid. These operations are then illustrated with an example using ARCS to create the solid model of a typical mechanical part from its orthographic projections.

The purpose of this paper is to inform the Academy of an application of computer graphics that has been successful in the court room and which has the potential for extension to many related needs of the forensic engineer. An additional purpose is to examine the possibility of cooperation within the Academy to make a broad database and selection of equipment available to the members. Attentive engineers of today are well aware of the growing use and impact of computer-aided drafting, design and analysis in a wide variety of industries. In our field, we are aware of large analysis programs which have been used with success in court, for example the CRASH series. The authors forensic engineering partnership has developed ways to utilize the more widely available drafting systems to inexpensively fill the gap between photographic evidence and full engineering drawings. We have also found that CAD drawings appear to have more impact in court than hand done drawings. In some cases

The author has researched and developed a theory of computation for caricature and has implemented this theory as an interactive computer graphics program. The Caricature Generator program is used to create caricatures by amplifying the differences between the face to be caricatured and a comparison face. This continuous, parallel amplification of facial features on the computer screen simulates the visualization process in the imagination of the caricaturist. The result is a recognizable, animated caricature, generated by computer and mediated by an individual who may or may not have facility for drawing, but who, like most human beings, is expert at visualizing and recognizing faces.
