In the literature, Holditch theorem was obtained under periodic rotation and translation motions in [H. Holditch, Geometrical theorem, Q. J. Pure Appl. Math. 2 (1858) 38] or periodic shear and translation motions in [O. Röschel, Der satz von Holditch in der isotropen ebene. Abh. Braunschweig. Wiss. Ges. 36 (1984) 27–32]. In this paper, by introducing the projection of a vector onto a plane, scalar area, area vector of a surface, we investigate Holditch theorem under periodic rotation, translation and shear motions. We give two interpretations for the Holditch type theorem in Galilean space.

AbstractIn this article we extend to arbitrary p-energy minimizing maps between Riemannian manifolds a regularity result which is known to hold in the case $$p=2$$ p = 2 . We first show that the set of singular points of such a map can be quantitatively stratified: we classify singular points based on the number of almost-symmetries of the map around them, as done in Cheeger and Naber (Commun Pure Appl Math 66(6): 965–990, 2013). Then, adapting the work of Naber and Valtorta (Ann Math (2) 185(1): 131–227, 2017), we apply a Reifenberg-type Theorem to each quantitative stratum; through this, we achieve an upper bound on the Minkowski content of the singular set, and we prove it is k-rectifiable for a k which only depends on p and the dimension of the domain.

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the 3D MHD fluid passing through the porous medium, and provide some fundamental Serrin type regularity criteria involving the velocity or its gradient, the pressure or its gradient. This extends and improves [S. Rahman, Regularity criterion for 3D MHD fluid passing through the porous medium in terms of gradient pressure, J. Comput. Appl. Math., 270 (2014), 88-99].

An emerging technique in image segmentation, semi-supervised learning and general classification problems concerns the use of phase-separating flows defined on finite graphs. This technique was pioneered in Bertozzi and Flenner (2012, Multiscale Modeling and Simulation10(3), 1090–1118), which used the Allen–Cahn flow on a graph, and was then extended in Merkurjev et al. (2013, SIAM J. Imaging Sci.6(4), 1903–1930) using instead the Merriman–Bence–Osher (MBO) scheme on a graph. In previous work by the authors, Budd and Van Gennip (2020, SIAM J. Math. Anal.52(5), 4101–4139), we gave a theoretical justification for this use of the MBO scheme in place of Allen–Cahn flow, showing that the MBO scheme is a special case of a ‘semi-discrete’ numerical scheme for Allen–Cahn flow. In this paper, we extend this earlier work, showing that this link via the semi-discrete scheme is robust to passing to the mass-conserving case. Inspired by Rubinstein and Sternberg (1992, IMA J. Appl. Math.48, 249–264), we define a mass-conserving Allen–Cahn equation on a graph. Then, with the help of the tools of convex optimisation, we show that our earlier machinery can be applied to derive the mass-conserving MBO scheme on a graph as a special case of a semi-discrete scheme for mass-conserving Allen–Cahn. We give a theoretical analysis of this flow and scheme, proving various desired properties like existence and uniqueness of the flow and convergence of the scheme, and also show that the semi-discrete scheme yields a choice function for solutions to the mass-conserving MBO scheme.

AbstractWe study the generalized eigenvalue problem in {\mathbb{R}^{N}} for a general convex nonlinear elliptic operator which is locally elliptic and positively 1-homogeneous. Generalizing [H. Berestycki and L. Rossi, Generalizations and properties of the principal eigenvalue of elliptic operators in unbounded domains, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 68 2015, 6, 1014–1065], we consider three different notions of generalized eigenvalues and compare them. We also discuss the maximum principles and uniqueness of principal eigenfunctions.

AbstractWe consider a parametric nonlinear, nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problem driven by the (p, q)-Laplacian with a reaction involving a singular term plus a superlinear reaction which does not satisfy the Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz condition. The main goal of the paper is to look for positive solutions and our approach is based on the use of variational tools combined with suitable truncations and comparison techniques. We prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing in a precise way the dependence of the set of positive solutions on the parameter $$\lambda $$ λ . Moreover, we produce minimal positive solutions and determine the monotonicity and continuity properties of the minimal positive solution map.
