This paper presents a patient-specific epileptic seizure predication method relying on the common spatial pattern- (CSP-) based feature extraction of scalp electroencephalogram (sEEG) signals. Multichannel EEG signals are traced and segmented into overlapping segments for both preictal and interictal intervals. The features extracted using CSP are used for training a linear discriminant analysis classifier, which is then employed in the testing phase. A leave-one-out cross-validation strategy is adopted in the experiments. The experimental results for seizure prediction obtained from the records of 24 patients from the CHB-MIT database reveal that the proposed predictor can achieve an average sensitivity of 0.89, an average false prediction rate of 0.39, and an average prediction time of 68.71 minutes using a 120-minute prediction horizon.

The key research aspects of detecting and predicting epileptic seizures using electroencephalography (EEG) signals are feature extraction and classification. This paper aims to develop a highly effective and accurate algorithm for seizure prediction. Efficient channel selection could be one of the solutions as it can decrease the computational loading significantly. In this research, we present a patient-specific optimization method for EEG channel selection based on permutation entropy (PE) values, employing K nearest neighbors (KNNs) combined with a genetic algorithm (GA) for epileptic seizure prediction. The classifier is the well-known support vector machine (SVM), and the CHB-MIT Scalp EEG Database is used in this research. The classification results from 22 patients using the channels selected to the patient show a high prediction rate (average 92.42%) compared to the SVM testing results with all channels (71.13%). On average, the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity with selected channels are improved by 10.58%, 23.57%, and 5.56%, respectively. In addition, four patient cases validate over 90% accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity rates with just a few selected channels. The corresponding standard deviations are also smaller than those used by all channels, demonstrating that tailored channels are a robust way to optimize the seizure prediction.

Background. Due to the redundant information contained in multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, the classification accuracy of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems may deteriorate to a large extent. Channel selection methods can help to remove task-independent electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and hence improve the performance of BCI systems. However, in different frequency bands, brain areas associated with motor imagery are not exactly the same, which will result in the inability of traditional channel selection methods to extract effective EEG features. New Method. To address the above problem, this paper proposes a novel method based on common spatial pattern- (CSP-) rank channel selection for multifrequency band EEG (CSP-R-MF). It combines the multiband signal decomposition filtering and the CSP-rank channel selection methods to select significant channels, and then linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was used to calculate the classification accuracy. Results. The results showed that our proposed CSP-R-MF method could significantly improve the average classification accuracy compared with the CSP-rank channel selection method.

To effectively reduce the day-to-day fluctuations and differences in subjects’ brain electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and improve the accuracy and stability of EEG emotion classification, a new EEG feature extraction method based on common spatial pattern (CSP) and wavelet packet decomposition (WPD) is proposed. For the five-day emotion related EEG data of 12 subjects, the CSP algorithm is firstly used to project the raw EEG data into an optimal subspace to extract the discriminative features by maximizing the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergences between the two categories of EEG data. Then the WPD algorithm is used to decompose the EEG signals into the related features in time-frequency domain. Finally, four state-of-the-art classifiers including Bagging tree, SVM, linear discriminant analysis and Bayesian linear discriminant analysis are used to make binary emotion classification. The experimental results show that with CSP spatial filtering, the emotion classification on the WPD features extracted with bior3.3 wavelet base gets the best accuracy of 0.862, which is 29.3% higher than that of the power spectral density (PSD) feature without CSP preprocessing, is 23% higher than that of the PSD feature with CSP preprocessing, is 1.9% higher than that of the WPD feature extracted with bior3.3 wavelet base without CSP preprocessing, and is 3.2% higher than that of the WPD feature extracted with the rbio6.8 wavelet base without CSP preprocessing. Our proposed method can effectively reduce the variance and non-stationary of the cross-day EEG signals, extract the emotion related features and improve the accuracy and stability of the cross-day EEG emotion classification. It is valuable for the development of robust emotional brain-computer interface applications.
