Critical checklist of the endemic vascular plants of Egypt

After many recent findings regarding geographical distribution and nomenclatural changes, an updated and revised checklist of the Egyptian endemic flora was needed. This study provides an up to date checklist of vascular taxa exclusive to Egypt and their distribution within the administrative provinces. Egypt hosts 48 endemic taxa (including 35 species, seven subspecies and six varieties) belonging to 42 genera, 18 families and representing 2.3% of the total flora. The most represented families are Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Fabaceae, Asparagaceae and Brassicaceae, while the most represented genus is Silene (three endemic taxa). Therophytes and chamaephytes are the most represented life-forms among Egyptian endemics. The richest regions in Egyptian endemic taxa are Southern Sinai (14 taxa), Northern Sinai and Matrouh (12 taxa each). Agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) enabled the division of Egypt into three main regions based on the occurrence of endemic taxa: Eastern Egypt (31 taxa, 25 exclusive and six shared taxa), Western Egypt (14 taxa, seven exclusive and seven shared taxa) and Middle Egypt (12 taxa, eight exclusive and four shared taxa). This checklist will help to focus conservation efforts and provide a framework for research, protection and policy implementations for these endemic taxa.

For the purpose of the present study we considered as Italian endemics those specific and subspecific taxa occurring in Italy that are not found elsewhere with the exception of Corsica (France) and Malta. This study presents an updated list of the endemic taxa in the Italian flora, including their geographical distribution at regional level. Italy is characterized by 1371 endemic species and subspecies (18.9% of the total vascular flora): three taxa belong to Lycopodiidae, one to Polypodiidae, two to Pinidae and 1365 to Magnoliidae (three paleoherbs, 221 monocots and 1144 eudicots). The endemic flora belongs to 29 orders, 67 families and 304 genera. Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria and Abruzzo are the four regions richest in endemics. About 58% of endemics are confined to a single administrative region. The most represented orders, families and genera are: Asterales, Caryophyllales and Asparagales, Asteraceae, Plumbaginaceae and Caryophyllaceae, Limonium, Centaurea and Hieracium, respectively. The phytogeographic isolation of Sardinia and Sicily and the separation of peninsular Italy from Northern Italy is confirmed. The relative isolation of Puglia with respect the remaining southern Italian pensinsular regions is also confirmed. Alpine region endemics (from northern Italy) are underrepresented.

The aim of the study was to present “Herbarium” computer database. The basic goal of construction of the database was gathering and analysing of archival and contemporary floristic data referring to the area of Central Poland. Registered information considers the stands and characteristic biological and ecological traits of particular taxa. Life forms, indices of ecological requirements, the phytogeographical elements, protection and threat status are among them. The database enables the presentation of geographical distribution of taxa in the area of Central Poland with the cartogram method based on the grid of 2 km2 according to the Distribution Atlas of Vascular Plants in Poland (ATPOL).

This study provides a first checklist of the native vascular plant taxa of Djurdjura National Park, based on collections and field visits (2011–2015), with an analysis of its composition and species diversity. The results of floristic analysis outlines the main characteristics of the flora of Djurdjura National Park. It hosts a remarkable species diversity of 757 plant taxa (including 659 species, 95 subspecies, 2 varieties, and 1 forma) belonging to 381 genera in 88 families. Despite covering ca. 0.008% of the total area of Algeria, this national park protects about 17% of the vascular plants of the country. The most represented families are Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, Lamiaceae, Apiaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Rosaceae, and Brassicaceae, while the most represented genera are Trifolium (with 15 taxa) and Silene (12). Hemicryptophytes (37.25%) and therophytes (30%) are the most represented life forms among the local flora, a pattern typical of mountainous areas. Mediterranean taxa comprise 64.6%, followed by North African taxa (14%), European (7.53%), and widely distributed taxa (13.87%), which reveals the Mediterranean character of the mountain’s flora. The endemic flora of Djurdjura National Park contains 106 taxa (14%), of which 20 are endemic to Algeria. In addition, six are exclusive and range-restricted to the Djurdjura National Park. Hence, we emphasized a large number of priority taxa (30) of high conservation value. The presence of exclusive endemics, and threatened species, along with high floristic diversity, strengthen the importance of plant conservation in the studied area.

The fuzzy clustering algorithm has become a research hotspot in many fields because of its better clustering effect and data expression ability. However, little research focuses on the clustering of hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets (HFLTSs). To fill in the research gaps, we extend the data type of clustering to hesitant fuzzy linguistic information. A kind of hesitant fuzzy linguistic agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm is proposed. Furthermore, we propose a hesitant fuzzy linguistic Boole matrix clustering algorithm and compare the two clustering algorithms. The proposed clustering algorithms are applied in the field of judicial execution, which provides decision support for the executive judge to determine the focus of the investigation and the control. A clustering example verifies the clustering algorithm’s effectiveness in the context of hesitant fuzzy linguistic decision information.

We present a list of endemic plants of Paraguay, which includes 374 taxa from 52 families and 162 genera based on the revision of primary data (herbarium collections). Synonyms, habit, distribution in Paraguay and all the voucher specimens seen or cited in recent bibliographies or in the consulted databases are provided for each taxon. A brief analysis of the diversity and importance of this endemic flora is presented. A list of excluded species, which were considered as endemics in previous publications, is also included.

We used Raunkiaer's system to classify in life-forms the vascular plants present in 12 random 25 m² quadrats of a cerrado site. The study area is covered by cerrado sensu stricto and is located in the Valério fragment, at about 22º13'S and 47º51'W, 760 m above sea level, in the Itirapina Ecological and Experimental Station, São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. The floristic spectrum considers the life-form of each species, while in the frequency spectrum, each species is weighted by its frequency. The vegetation spectrum does not consider the species at all, but only the individuals in each life-form class. In the floristic spectrum, the most represented life-forms were the phanerophytes and the hemicryptophytes, as in other cerrado sites. This spectrum differed significantly from Raunkiaer's normal spectrum, mainly due to under-representation of therophytes and over-representation of phanerophytes. The floristic and frequency spectra were similar, but both differed from the vegetation spectrum. We recommend the floristic spectrum when working at larger scales and a description of the phytoclimate is wanted. The vegetation spectrum is preferable when working at smaller scales and wanting a quantitative description of the physiognomy. The frequency spectrum is not recommended at all.
