A new species of Magnolia from the southern Sierra Madre Oriental, Mexico, is described and illustrated, providing information about its habitat distribution, ecology, biogeography and conservation status. After 12 fieldwork expeditions near the border of the states of Hidalgo and Puebla, we have developed morphological, ecological and biogeographic data to support recognition of populations from Acaxochitlán, Hidalgo and Pahuatlán, Puebla as a distinct species of Magnolia sect. Macrophylla. A key to species of this section and a distribution map for Mexican taxa are provided. The species was assessed as critically endangered (CR).

Recent botanical explorations in Sierra Madre Occidental in Durango, Mexico, led to the discovery of a new species which according to its morphology belongs to Salvia sect. Brandegeia. The new taxon is morphologically most similar to S. oresbia from central Mexico, against which it is thoroughly compared. Additionally, it is presented a synopsis of the section in order to provide updated and standardized descriptions for those species known only in base to their protologues, which allows a more detailed and precise comparison in respect to the new species. The morphological examination of the species in the section also revealed that the recognition of S. sharpii as a distinct species from S. blepharophylla is not justified; consequently, it is reduced to synonymy. An identification key, a distribution map, photographs, and a drawing of the new species are also presented.

Dasylirion micropterum is described as a new species from high elevations of the Sierra Madre Oriental in the Mexican state of Coahuila. It differs from known species of Dasylirion for having ascending dark green leaves, narrow inflorescences, small fruits with narrow wings and its distribution restricted to the western side of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The identity of the new species was confirmed through the sequence of matK and rbcL plastid DNA regions. GenBank sequences accessions are included. An illustration, photos and a distribution map are presented for the new species.

A new species of Neojobertia is described from Brazil, Neojobertia alboaurantiaca. With the inclusion of this new species into the genus, Neojobertia includes three species, all of which are endemic to Brazil. Neojobertia alboaurantiaca grows predominantly in savannas and occurs in four neighbouring Brazilian states, Maranhão, Piauí, Goiás and Tocantins. In this study, we describe the new species, its habitat, distribution and evaluate its conservation status, as well as present a distribution map, illustrate key features and discuss the morphological features that distinguish it from Neojobertia mirabilis. The conservation status of the species has been evaluated as EN (endangered).

As part of ongoing studies on Magnolia sect. Macrophylla in North America (Mexico), unusual populations from the humid forests of Sierra Madre Oriental (central western Tamaulipas State) were found. They are here formalized as a new species, M. alejandrae. Its morphology, ecology, and conservation status are provided. A morphological comparison with similar species and diagnostic key for the species of M. sect. Macrophylla are also included. The names Magnolia ashei, M. macrophylla, and M. dealbata are lectotypified, respectively, on specimens preserved at NCU, and P and on a Zuccarini illustration. An epitype (at M) was chosen for M. dealbata.

A new species, Begonia solaniflora Jara is described from Colombia. This species belongs to section Casparya as evident by the fruit type, but is also easily distinguished from other Casparya species by the undivided or rarely bifid styles, the stamens erect with the anthers connivent and the nearly symmetrical leaves. We provide illustrations, photographs, a distribution map of the species and after an assessment of its conservation status we propose to place it in the Critically Endangered (CR) category.

We describe and illustrate Magnolia mixteca, a new species of Magnolia sect. Macrophylla from the Alto Balsas Basin in Oaxaca, Mexico, providing information about its ecology, biogeography and conservation status. Magnolia mixteca differs from M. nuevoleonensis in having larger flowers, longer petals, a yellow petal-blotch, a tan-sand coloured ovary and more numerous stamens and carpels. In addition, we provide a distribution map and key to species of sect. Macrophylla. The relict distribution of this species allows us to consider it endangered (E).

Abstract—Justicia rubrobracteata, a new species from northeastern Brazil, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to J. aequilabris due to its shrubby habit, and terminal and axillary spicate inflorescences with red flowers. However, J. rubrobracteata is differentiated mainly by the shape and color of its bracts and bracteoles as well as an orangish macula in the corolla, and a torulose capsule. In addition, J. rubrobracteata is only known from northeastern Brazil, from the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte, while J. aequilabris is widely distributed in Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. A table with the main morphological characters of both species is included, as well as photographs, a key to species of Justicia for the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil, a distribution map of both species, and conservation data for the new species.

Silene lulakabadensis Heidari, F. Ghahrem. & Assadi is described as a new species from Zanjan Province, Iran. The new species is a dark green plant, perennial and woody at the base, that was collected on marl soil slopes at 2100 m. It is believed to be closely related to S. eriocalycina Boiss. from section Auriculatae (Boiss.) Schischk. but is a smaller plant, with much shorter internodes, and pinkish-white retuse to emarginate petals with very small or no scales. It is a very rare plant and its conservation status is assessed as Critically Endangered.

Beaucarnea olsonii is described and illustrated from tropical deciduous forests of SW Puebla, Mexico. The new species can be distinguished from other Beaucarnea species by its massively swollen base that abruptly tapers into slender branches, by its conspicuously long stigma, and by its pedicel articulation that occurs at 2/3 of the length of the pedicel below the flower. With this new addition, the total number of endemic species of Beaucarnea for Mexico increases to 10, making this country the greatest center of diversification and endemism for the genus. We also provide a distribution map and a conservation status recommendation for the new species, as well as a key to the Beaucarnea species of southern central Mexico.

In this study, Fritillaria arsusiana (Liliaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Hatay province in southern Anatolia, Turkey. It is related to F. amana and F. hermonis by habitus features and broadly campanulate flowers, but differs mainly by its bulb shape and size, smaller leaf and flower features, and flower colour. It has also been morphologically compared with F. wendelboi, F. pinardii, and F. latakiensis. The detailed description, diagnostic characters, original photographs, geographical distribution, habitat and phenology, etymology, conservation status, and identification key of the new and the related species are presented in this study. IUCN conservation status of F. arsusiana is suggested as Critically Endangered (CR).
