Glyptothorax ketambe, a new catfish (Teleostei: Sisoridae) from northern Sumatra

Glyptothorax ketambe, a new species of sisorid catfish is described from the Alas River drainage in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Province, northern Sumatra. Glyptothorax ketambe can be distinguished from all other Sundaic congeners except G. schmidti and G. siamensis in having a color pattern consisting of a dark brown body with yellowish midlateral and mid-dorsal stripes. It differs from G. schmidti and G. siamensis in having a combination of: caudal-peduncle depth 7.6–8.9% SL, head width 16.1–17.9% SL, thoracic adhesive apparatus not reaching to the level of the base of the last pectoral-fin ray, and thoracic adhesive apparatus with an almost straight lateral margin. The identity of G. schmidti is also clarified in this study.

Microglanis carlae, new species, is described from the río Paraguay basin and distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: paired and anal fins mottled or with thin faint bands, trunk with dark-brown saddles, anterior margin of pectoral spine with serrations retrorse proximally and antrorse distally, tip of pectoral spine as a distinct bony point, continuous portion of lateral line reaching vertical through last dorsal-fin ray, caudal peduncle with irregularly shaped, faint to dark blotch, maxillary barbel surpassing vertical through dorsal-spine origin, and dark bar on posterior flank continuous from base of adipose fin to that of anal fin. The new species is included in the Microglanis parahybae species complex on the basis of color pattern.

Glyptothorax coracinus sp. nov. is described from the western face of the Krâvanh (Cardamom) Mountains and Dâmrei (Elephant) Mountains in southwestern Cambodia. It can be distinguished from congeners by its color pattern consisting of blackish brown body with indistinct pale longitudinal stripes on the lateral line and mid-dorsal regions of the body, pale markings on the nuchal plate absent, length of adipose-fin base 12.3–14.5% SL, length of caudal peduncle 18.6– 21.0% SL, depth of caudal peduncle 7.9–9.4% SL, body depth at anus 11.0–14.6% SL, eye diameter 6.3–7.2% HL, 36– 37 vertebrae, tubercles on the dorsal surface of the head with a single, median ridge, and anastomosing striae absent on thoracic adhesive apparatus that does not reach the level of the base of the last pectoral-fin ray.

A new species of Gephyrocharax is described from the río Cascajales basin, a tributary of the río La Colorada, río Magdalena system, Colombia. The new species is distinguished from its congeners, exceptG. melanocheir, by the absence of an adipose fin in most specimens and by the possession of a lateral branched pectoral-fin ray in males with a distal fan-shaped structure with minute bony hooks and a dark blotch or a few scattered dark brown chromatophores along its branches. The new species differs from G.melanocheir by the absence of an intense black pigmentation at the base of the anterior five dorsal-fin rays, the number of vertebrae (40-41vs. 38-39), the frontals contacting each other anterior to the epiphyseal bar in adults (vs. the absence of contact), the posterior margin of the mesethmoid straight in its central portion (vs. strongly concave at this point), the pouch scale of mature males reaching caudal-fin ray 11 or the area between caudal-fin rays 11 and 12 (vs. reaching only to caudal-fin ray 10 or the area between caudal-fin rays 9 and 10), the number of minute terminal branches of the lateral branched pectoral-fin ray of mature males (60-88 vs. 28-54), a longer black lateral stripe along the body in males (reaching to the base of the caudal-fin rays vs. reaching the middle of the length of the caudal peduncle), and the snout length (28.3-31.8% HLvs. 22.2-28.0% HL). The diagnosis ofGephyrocharax is modified to include species with the adipose fin variably present

A new species of Metahomaloptera, M. longicauda, is described from the lower Jinsha River, China. The new species is distinguished from other species of Metahomaloptera by the following combination of characters: pectoral fin with 11– 15 branched rays, tip of pectoral fin extending beyond origin of dorsal fin, pelvic fin with 10–12 branched rays, pelvicfin tip reaching or extending beyond anus, dorsal fin inserting before middle of body, tip of dorsal fin far from vertical line of caudal-fin base, head width 19.4–22.6% SL, pre-pectoral length 8.4–9.9% SL, pre-anal length 69.0–74.3% SL, caudal peduncle length 17.1–20.7% SL, eye diameter 14.6–16.6% HL, caudal peduncle depth 33.7–43.1% caudal peduncle length, mouth width 63.2–75.5% body width at pectoral-fin origin.

The genus Centromochlus includes eight catfish species in the Amazon and Orinoco river systems: C. schultzi from Xingu and Tocantins-Araguaia rivers; C. melanoleucus from Tapajós and Teles Pires rivers; C. macracanthus from Negro River; C. orca from Nhamundá River; C. heckelii and C. existimatus from Amazon and additionally at the Essequibo rivers; C. carolae and C. musaica from Orinoco River system. Recent field expeditions and collection examination revealed an undescribed species of Centromochlinae that has compatible features with Centromochlus. We herein describe a new species of Centromochlus from the Tocantins-Araguaia River drainage, diagnosed among most Centromochlinae by having a vermiculated color pattern on the dorsum and included in Centromochlus by sharing the derived features: ventrolateral position of eye socket; sphenotic notched for the exit of infraorbital canal; and posterior serrations along pectoral-fin spine numerous. The new species is diagnosed from congeners by having the pectoral-fin spine with dark bars, alternating with light bars (vs. pectoral-fin spine with light and uniform color in all Centromochlus); and it is further distinguished from its congeners (except C. carolae) by the ventral surface of head moderate to largely pigmented (vs. ventral surface of head unpigmented in C. heckelii, C. existimatus, C. orca, C. musaicus, C. schultzi, with few scattered dark chromatophores in C. macracanthus and C. melanoleucus; see diagnosis). A discussion about the systematics of the genus, plus the conservation status of the new species, and an identification key to species of Centromochlus, are also provided.

Pseudolaguvia ferula, a new species of erethistid catish, is described from the Brahmaputra River drainage in India. It can be distinguished from congeners in having a terete (vs. depressed) head and body, manifested in the narrower head width (17.1–19.1% SL vs. 19.4–23.4), a smaller anterior fontanel (about one third the length of the frontals vs. at least half the length), and very faint, poorly contrasting cream bands that are sometimes absent on some individuals (vs. sharply contrasting cream bands on a brown body). It can be further distinguished from congeners in having a unique combination of the following characters: dorsal-spine length 17.3–18.7% SL, pectoral-spine length 20.2–24.3% SL, pelvic-fin length 13.0–14.7% SL, length of adipose-fin base 11.5–13.0% SL, caudal peduncle depth 6.9–7.8% SL, body depth at anus 12.1–13.8% SL, eye diameter 8.6–11.7% HL, vertebrae 28–30, and thoracic adhesive apparatus reaching to midway between bases of last pectoral-fin ray and first pelvic-fin ray. with its unculiferous ridges joined at their posterior ends.

Pseudolaguvia virgulata, a new South Asian sisorid catfish species, is described from the Barak River drainage in Mizoram, India. The new species can be distinguished from congeners in having a brown body with two or three narrow, pale longitudinal stripes and a pale Y-shaped marking on the dorsal surface of the head. Additional distinguishing characters from its congeners are a serrated anterior edge of the dorsal spine, the thoracic adhesive apparatus reaching beyond the base of the last pectoral-fin ray, head width, pectoral-fin length, length of dorsal-fin base, dorsal-spine length, body depth at anus, length of adipose-fin base, caudal peduncle length, caudal peduncle depth, snout length, interorbital distance, and total number of vertebrae.

A new characid species, Hemibrycon divisorensis, is described from the río Ucayali drainage, Loreto, Peru. The new species is distinguished from all Hemibrycon species by the presence of a wide black asymmetrical spot covering base of caudal-fin rays and extending along entire length of caudal-fin rays 9 to 12-13 (except from H. surinamensis), and a black band in the lower half of the caudal peduncle extending from the region above the last anal-fin rays to the caudal-fin base. Furthermore, it is distinguished from most species of the genus by the number of scale rows below the lateral line (4-5 vs 5-9), except H. jabonero, H. microformaa, H. orcesi, and H. surinamensis. It differs from these species by scale and fin ray counts and color pattern. The lack of a supraorbital in Hemibrycon species is discussed and confirmed.

Four new species of Rhinogobius Gill 1859 are described from the Black River drainage in China and Vietnam. Rhinogobius coccinella, new species, and R. nanophyllum, new species, are described from the Mengyejiang River in Yunnan, China. Rhinogobius coccinella is diagnosed by having the cheek and operculum with about 25 large dark spots and branchiostegal membrane unmarked; caudal-peduncle depth 11–12% SL; 1–5 predorsal scales; 27–30 midlateral scales; and 28 vertebrae. Rhinogobius nanophyllum is diagnosed by having the cheek, operculum and pectoral-fin base with about 90 indistinct white marks, caudal fin plain-colored, second dorsal fin magnified with a very broad dark gray median band and a broad white proximal band in males; caudal-peduncle length 22–25% SL and pectoral-fin length 21–24% SL in males; head width at operculum 53–58% HL in males, 58–61% HL in females; 0 predorsal scales; 8–10 branched rays in the second dorsal fin; 7–8 branched anal-fin rays; and 28 vertebrae. Rhinogobius ngutinhoceps, new species, is described from the Nam Na River in Lai Chau, Vietnam. It differs from all congeners by the presence of a supraotic pore β; cheek and operculum with about 65 dark marks and branchiostegal membrane unmarked in males; snout pointed; lower jaw conspicuously protruding; predorsal length 40–41% SL; 12–15 predorsal scales; and 29 vertebrae. Rhinogobius phuongae, new species, is described from the Nam Mu River in Lai Chau, Vietnam, and is diagnosed by having the cheek with about 25 indistinct dark spots and branchiostegal membrane with pale spots in males; operculum unmarked; flank plain-colored in males; a conspicuous black blotch between spines I and III of the first dorsal fin; unpaired fins with a very broad white distal band; pectoral-fin length 20–21% SL; 8–10 predorsal scales; 8–9 branched rays in the second dorsal fin; and 28 vertebrae. A key to the species of Rhinogobius occurring within the Red River drainage is given.

A new species, Poecilia (Pamphorichthys) akroa, is described from the Rio Tocantins drainage, Brazil. The new species differs from the remaining species of the genus by the possession of 10 or 11 pectoral-fin rays, entire preopercular ramus and posterior portion of the supraorbital ramus of the cephalic sensory system enclosed in canals, a faint longitudinal band along the body, a single gonapophysis, a homogeneous reticulate color pattern on sides of body, urogenital region of females heavily pigmented, distalmost segments of the anterior branch (4a) of the fourth gonopodial ray fused into an elongated segment turned anteriorly, subdistal segments of anterior branch (5a) of fifth gonopodial ray simple, without anterior (ventral) projections, dorsal fin with pigmentation at its distal portion and with a basal black blotch, and chromatophores more concentrated on the posterior margin of the mid-ventral scale series of the caudal peduncle and ventrolateral margin of the adjacent scales forming a series of rhombi posterior to anal fin.
