In Japan, the genus Ectamenogonus Buysson, 1893 (tribe Megapenthini Gurjeva, 1973, subfamily Elaterinae Leach, 1815) was considered to have five species. However, the Japanese species remain unclear. The taxonomy of Japanese Ectamenogonus is revised and four species are confirmed: E. matobai (Kishii, 1973), E. miyakoensis sp. nov., E. plebejus (Candèze, 1873), and E. robustus (Kishii, 1966). Ectamenogonus matobai, E. plebejus, and E. robustus are redescribed. Ectamenogonus miyakoensis is described. Ectamenogonus yakuensis (Ôhira, 1970) and E. takumii Kishii, 2006 are synonymized with E. plebejus and E. robustus, respectively. A key to the four species in Japan is provided.

Six Japanese species of the genus Lecithocera Herrich-Schäffer, 1853 (Gelechioidea: Lecithoceridae) are treated: L. chersitis Meyrick, 1918; L. daebuensis Park & Lee, 1999; L. duplicata (Gozmány, 1978); L. tridentata Wu & Liu, 1993; L. fascimaculata sp. nov.; and L. fuscialaris sp. nov.. One species, L. duplicata (Gozmány, 1978), is reported for the first time from Japan. The male and female genitalia, wing venation, and adult appearance are illustrated for all the species.

Japanese species of the muscaeforme-group, charon-group, and floridanum-group of Gryon have been revised. Among the species of the muscaeforme-group, G. fulvicoxasp. nov. is newly described. Gryon misha Kozlov & Kononova, syn. nov. is considered a junior synonym of G. japonicum (Ashmead). Gryon maruzzae Mineo, syn. nov. and G. sugonjaevi Kozlov & Kononova, syn. nov. are considered junior synonyms of G. yamagishii Mineo. Among the species of the charon-group, G. shisasp. nov. is newly described. Gryon hakonense (Ashmead) syn. nov. is considered as a junior synonym of G. philippinense (Ashmead). Among the species of the floridanum-group, G. pennsylvanicum (Ashmead) is recognized. Host records of the three species groups are also revised.

The Japanese species of the genus Linycus Cameron are examined with two species recognized. A Holarctic species, L. exhortator (Fabricius) is newly collected from Japan [Hokkaido, Honshû, Shikoku, Kyûshû], and a new species, L. kyoheii sp. nov., is described from Yamanshi Pref., Honshû. The two Japanese species can be distinguished by a white spot on scutellum (present in L. kyoheii vs. absent in L. exhorator), and sculpture of area between gastrocoeli (weakly rugose-punctate in L. kyoheii vs. clearly rugose in L. exhortator). We also compared the Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO1) of Japanese L. exhortator with European L. exhortator. The p-distances between Japanese and European subspecies exhortator were about 2%, whereas between Japanese and Nearctic ssp. thoracius (Cresson) were about 5%. Here we provisionally treat Japanese L. exhorator as nominotypical subspecies. The intra-specific DNA barcode divergence and allopatric color variations are discussed.

Attention is drawn to the one side remaining of a nineteenth-century correspondence addressed to Alexander Somerville that is housed in the archives of the Scottish Association for Marine Science at Oban, concerning conchological matters. Previously unstudied letters from James Thomas Marshall shed new light on the practicalities of offshore dredging by nineteenth-century naturalists in the Clyde Sea Area; on personalities within conchology; on the controversies that raged among the conchological community about the production of an agreed list of British molluscan species and on the tensions between conchology and malacology. In particular, the criticism of Canon A. E. Norman's ideas regarding taxonomic revision of J. G. Jeffreys's British conchology, as expressed by Marshall, are highlighted.
