A new species of Corallana Dana, 1852 (Crustacea: Isopoda: Corallanidae) from the Andaman Islands, northern Indian Ocean

Corallana mishrai sp. nov. collected from dead mangrove roots at Kodiyaghat, South Andaman, Andaman Islands, India is described and illustrated in detail. Corallana mishrai sp. nov. the first definitive record of the genus from India, is characterized by: frontal lamina with short straight (or very weakly convex) lateral margins and the anterior margin forming a strong acute median point; pleotelson length 0.76 greatest width, posterior margin with 5 robust setae; uropodal exopod 7 times longer than greatest width, extending beyond endopod by one fourth of its length; endopod lateral margin slightly convex with 4 RS and PMS, apex forms a slightly obtuse angle with long simple setae, mesial margin weakly convex with 2 RS and PMS; mandible bidentate; transverse row of 6 tubercles present on pereonite 1 and pleonites 2, 3 and 4 lacking lateral tubercles. The status of the genus and its species are reviewed, and two species are transferred to new combinations: Argathona kulai (Bruce, 1982) comb. nov. and Tachaea bidentata (Jones et al. 1983) comb. nov.

Aphantolana wandoor sp. nov. is described from intertidal algae in South Andaman, Andaman Islands. Aphantolana wandoor sp. nov. is characterized by the uropodal exopod posterolateral margin with a slight concavity, mesial margin evenly convex with 2 robust setae, pleotelson posterolateral lateral margin concave, weakly sinuate.

Murdannia sanjappae, a new species of dewflower plant of the dayflower family from Rutland Island, South Andaman Islands, India, is described and illustrated.  This novel species is similar to M. tenuissima in not having any staminodes, but differs from it by having oblong-lanceolate leaves with cordate base, distinct peduncle, pedicel with 2–3 articulations, ovate petals, and 24–30-seeded capsules.

The systematic position of the agamid genus Coryphophylax (Squamata: Agamidae) is given as monotypic and endemicto the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, India. After having surveyed intensively in thirteen differentIslands and examined several individuals in the Andamans group of islands, we describe a second species ofCoryphophylax from the lowland rainforests of the South Andaman Island. Coryphophylax brevicaudus sp. nov. isdifferentiated from its congener, C. subcristatus (Blyth, “1860” 1861) by its smaller size, relatively shorter tail, presenceof nuchal and dorsal crests in both sexes, midbody scale row counts and colour pattern. The new species lives in sympatrywith C. subcristatus. The taxonomic history and systematic status of the genus Coryphophylax are discussed, and the need for continued surveys in the Islands is emphasized.

Ryukyua circularis (Pillai, 1954) is recorded here for the first time on the host Amblygaster clupeoides Bleeker, 1849 from Indian waters. The species is redescribed with illustrations of the gravid female, adult male and manca from its type locality, and the known hosts and geographical records of the species are reviewed. Ryukyua circularis is readily identified from the oval to rounded body shape, widest at pereonite 3–5; cephalon deeply immersed in pereonite 1; mandible palp with the spiny surface, article 3 with a long terminal setae; pleonite 1–3 partially overlapped by a posterolateral margin of pereonite 7; pleotelson anterior lateral margins weakly convex, posterior margin evenly rounded, without median point.

Dimeria andamanica (Poaceae) is herein described and illustrated as a new species. It is known from relict region of Chidiya Tapu, South Andaman of the Andaman Islands, India. The new species belongs to the Dimeria sect. Loriformes and is closely related to D. fischeri, but differs by the characters of raceme-rachis 1.5–2 mm wide, spikelets 6–7 mm long, lower glume 5–5.5 mm long, upper glume 5–6 mm long, lower lemma 3.5–4 mm long, upper lemma 4–5 mm long, upper floret palea present and anthers 1.5–2 mm long.

Orthetrum andamanicum sp. nov. (holotype ♂: India, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, South Andaman island, Chidiyatapu, N 11.51, E 92.71; 08-xii-1998; deposited in RMNH, Leiden; RMNH.INS.1152911), is described as new to science. Based on additional photographic records, notes on mature males’ life colouration, distribution and habitat of this Andaman endemic are provided.

Abstract—Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium, composed of the taxonomically notorious H. polyanthos and approximately 15 other closely related taxa, is a common element of filmy fern communities in the tropical and subtropical moist forests. In Taiwan, although only H. polyanthos and one or two closely related taxa were recognized in recent studies, considerable morphological variation has been observed among populations throughout the island. Thus, we conducted an extensive morphological investigation, as well as a molecular phylogenetic analysis, to clarify the specific diversity and phylogenetic relationships within Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium in Taiwan. Field and herbaria surveys helped in recognizing five morphs in Taiwan, mainly differentiated by the combination of certain traits, viz., the presence or absence of stipe wings, general frond size and shape, degree of laminar crispation, sori position, and involucre shape. The different morphs had diverse ecological preferences. The phylogenetic tree, inferred from the sequences of the plastid loci rbcL and rps4-trnS, demonstrated that Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium materials in Taiwan comprise several well-supported lineages, mostly corresponding to the classification based on morphology. Comparing with the protologues and type specimens of 34 related scientific names, the five morphs are herein recognized as five independent species. A new species, Hymenophyllum exquisitum, is described here. Also, the status of H. paniculiflorum is reconfirmed and that of H. fujisanense, H. parallelocarpum, and H. punctisorum reinstated. Only H. exquisitum and H. parallelocarpum are endemic to Taiwan among all the species studied. In addition, the names Hymenophyllum blumeanum, H. integrum, H. microsorum, H. polyanthos, H. tenellum, and H. wrightii are now excluded from the regional flora, and several related taxa from China, Taiwan, and the Philippines are treated as synonyms. This study unravels the deep phylogenetic relationships within Hymenophyllum subg. Mecodium in Taiwan and Eastern Asia.
