Hierarchical representation and similarity assessment for reuse of sheet metal parts

Sheet metal parts are widely used in the manufacturing industry. With the number of 3D models increasing, it is essential to retrieve existing resources. Effective similarity assessment would be useful in many downstream applications, such as design reuse and manufacture process revision. We propose a hierarchical representation and similarity assessment algorithm to retrieve 3D models of sheet metal parts. Based on single-side representation extracted from solid models, flat and bent faces are recognized and clustered into groups. The morphological relationship between these two groups is then described and an attributed graph is built to store the connection between flat groups. A hierarchical representation is derived by a simplification and assembly process. This structure supports similarity assessment in different levels of detail; thus, a multiple-resolution formula is introduced to measure the total similarity. The algorithms were implemented based on a neutral standard for the exchange of product model data (STEP) format and a prototype demonstrates the application in shape search and reuse in manufacturing industry.

The short comings and limitations of traditional inspection method of sheet metal parts were described in this paper. Aiming at the inspection method based on the 3D models of sheet metal parts, the method of the inspection information extraction was introduced also. The actual shape of the sheet metal was obtained by the portable photoelectric equipments and then the 3D model was formed. The inspection information was extracted from the 3D model by the system which developed by VC++ tools on the CATIA platform. The characteristics of this method are high accuracy, environmental protection and high efficiency.

In the assembly process of auto-body, variations in the geometrical dimensions of sheet metal parts and fixtures are inevitable. These variations accumulate through the multi-station assembly process to form the dimensional variations of the final products. Compared with the assembly of rigid parts, the assembly process of the elastic parts is more complex because the variation accumulation patterns rely much on the variations of fixture, jointing methods and mechanical deformation. This paper aims at analyzing the variation transformation mechanism and accumulation characteristics for the assembly of sheet metal parts based on the analysis of dimensional coordination relations among parts and fixtures. Finite element method (FEM) and Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) were used to analyze the effect of jointing contact on variation transformation, while a state equation was developed to describe the variation accumulation mechanism. The result of the analysis indicates that the main characteristics of elastic assembly jointing are the overlap jointing methods and elastic contacts action. The fact that the variation transform coefficients (VTC) are variable makes the assembly variation distribution Non-Gaussian even if the dimension variation of parts is Gaussian distribution. The analysis conclusions have potential value for more reasonable tolerance synthesis of elastic parts assembly.
