Reliability-based robust design of wind turbine’s shrink disk

Wind turbine’s shrink disk (WTSD), as a component of transmission system, plays a crucial role in the wind turbine work. In this study, the matrix expression of combined pressure and interference magnitude has been derived by analyzing the geometry relationship of interference fit of multi-layer cylinder. The mechanic model is built by simplifying WTSD as interference fit of multi-layer cylinder. The reliability model is established on the basis of pressure-strength model, and the formula regarding reliability sensitivity is derived. In terms of the minimum principle on the square sum of reliability sensitivity and the minimum reliability principle, the reliability-based robust design (RBRD) model is built under the multi-objective conditions, and the dynamic reliability model is established on the basis of reliability model, load model, and residual strength model. Dynamic reliability sensitivity formula is deduced, and the dynamic reliability-based robust design (DRBRD) model is established under the multi-objective conditions. The effects of the coefficient of friction, assembly clearance, and yield strength on the reliability of WTSD are analyzed by RBRD and DRBRD methods. Taking a type of WTSD as an example, the calculating results validate that the reliability changes along with interference magnitude. The comparison of results shows that the above methods and Monte Carlo method have the same tendency and approximately agree well. Moreover, the traditional design method and RBRD method are compared. It turned out that RBRD can improve the reliability of WTSD by 47.6%, the reliability-based sensitivity is less than that from the traditional design method, and the robustness is stronger. The experiment verified that the design methods of this study can better meet the operation requirements.

In practical application, a nominal model is often used to approximate the design of industrial system. This approximation could make the traditional design method less effective due to the existence of model uncertainty. In this paper, a novel robust design approach is proposed to design the robustness of the dynamic system under model uncertainty. The key idea of this proposed method is that it integrates the advantages of both the model-based dynamic robust design and the data-based uncertainty compensation. A simulation example is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust design method.

The reliability-based optimization, the reliability sensitivity technique, and the robust design are employed to present a practical and effective approach of robust reliability design for mechanical components on the condition of known probabilistic characteristics of original random variables. The theoretical formula of robust reliability design for mechanical components is obtained. The respective program can be used to obtain the robust reliability design parameters accurately and quickly. According to the numerical results, the method proposed is a convenient and practical robust reliability design method.

In this paper, a novel stability-based approach is proposed to design the system ensuring robust stability under model uncertainty. First, the design variables and their variation bounds are configured to make the system stable. Then, a robust design is developed to incorporate system eigenvalues that are less sensitive to model uncertainty. Finally, the tolerance of the design space will be maximized under given performance constraints. A simulation example is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed robust design method.

The frequency reliability sensitivity in the stochastic dynamic structure system and reliability-based robust design were studied deeply in this paper. With the criterion that the absolute value of the difference between natural frequency and forcing frequency, the frequency reliability method of avoiding resonance was proposed. Then frequency reliability sensitivity theory was presented, which provided a preliminary efficient way to analyze how each random parameter contributed to the system reliability. Moreover, the frequency reliability-based robust design method was obtained by robust and optimization technology on the basis of the frequency reliability and sensitivity research in the paper, which helped designers to establish acceptable parameter values and to determine the fluctuations of the parameters for the safe operations. Meanwhile, a numerical example of the random vibration system of continuous rod was provided and studied. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed methods were well demonstrated.

Abstract This paper gives general information about multi-objective, axiomatic and robust design approaches and considersasolution model of nonlinear multi-objective optimization problem based on applyinganew robust design approach. Both axiomatic and robust design approaches were used complementarily inacase study with distinct multi-objectives. In this case study, the main target was achieving each objective optimum to minimize the mass and the shear stress ofaspring by integrating robustness and durability at the design stage due to trade off between objectives. This spring problem was examined using the independence axiom of the axiomatic design methodology. Also, semangularity and reangularity concepts were used and design matrices were formed to find coupled and decoupled solutions. It was observed that there were some acceptable design parameter values for which the design became decoupled. Graphical and numerical results were checked to see if they were compatible with each other. Finally, this decoupled design was given appropriate tolerances by using robust design method. This way,arobust and durable spring was designed which would satisfy the given specifications with minimum cost in the existing literature from the view point of axiomatic design approach.

Based on the reliability-based optimization design theory, the reliability sensitivity technique and the robust design method, the reliability-based robust design of rubbing rotor system is extensively discussed and a numerical method for reliability-based robust design is proposed. The reliability sensitivity is added to the reliability-based optimization design model and the reliability-based robust design is described as a multi-objection optimization. On the condition of known first four moments of basic random variables, the respective program can be used to obtain the reliability-based robust design information of rubbing rotor system accurately and quickly using the fourth moment technique. According to the numerical results, the approach proposed is a convenient and practical reliability-based roust design method.

Reliability Analysis is applied into tower structural design and influence of uncertain factors is considered into the design. The reliability robust optimization mathematical model of tower structure is established by combining the reliability optimization designing theory with the robust design method and injecting reliability sensitivity into the design model. The reliability sensitivity is added to the reliability-based optimization design model and the stiffness reliability-based robust design is reduced to a multi-objection optimization. Take the lattice tower structure for example, after designing, it shows not only lighter weigh, saving in material, simplifying construction, but also improving its safety and stability. The example proves the method to be effective.

The perturbation method, the Edgeworth series, the reliability-based optimization, the reliability sensitivity technique, and the robust design method are employed to present practical and effective approaches of reliability-based optimization and robust design for coil tube-spring with non-normal distribution parameters, on the condition of the known first four moments of the original random variables. Theoretical formulae for reliability-based optimization and robust design are obtained. The respective programmes can be used to obtain the reliability-based optimization and robust design parameters of a coil tube-spring with non-normal distribution parameters accurately and quickly.

The material properties and geometry of rotor system are random parameters because of the manufacturing environment, manufacturing and installation errors and other factors. Based on the reliability design theory, the reliability sensitivity technique and the robust design method, the frequency reliability robust optimization method of rotor system is extensively discussed. The frequency reliability sensitivity is added to the reliability-based optimization design model of rotor system. The frequency reliability robust design is described as a multi-objection optimization. The method presented provided the theoretic basis for the reliability robust design of the rotor system. A numerical example demonstrated that the proposed method is effective.
