This paper describes the application of a modelling technique to determine the effect of the antero-posterior loading in the hip joint on bone and prosthesis stresses. The technique employs the use of model femora cast in a polyurethane foam and femoral prostheses made from various plastics to simulate titanium and chrome–cobalt. The study showed that antero-posterior forces produce significant stresses in the prostheses and emphasises the importance of considering these forces in the design of femoral prostheses.
