The modifying effect of growth regulators on bud burst, flower bud formation and sex expression in olives varies greatly according to cultivar, concentration and time of application. Cycocel 200, 500 mg/l, ethephon 200 mg/l and SADH 2000 mg/l stimulated bud burst and flower bud formation in the 'Blanquetta' cv. A noticeable increase in the percentage of perfect flowers was obtained by 100 mg/l of kinetin, and 200 mg/l of Cycocel in the cv. 'Picual', Ethephon 200/1, Cycocel 200 mg/l and SADH 2000 mg/l considerably increased the percentage of perfect flowers in the cvs 'Blanquetta', 'Serrana' and 'Picual'. Treatments at green cluster stage were not effective.

The plant growth regulators, daminozide (2500 ppm), chlormequat chloride (1500 ppm), ethephon (500 ppm), mepiquat chloride (100 ppm), and paclobutrazol (1000 ppm), were foliar applied to sprouting-year and to first fruiting-year commercial lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.). In sprouting-year blueberry, flower bud production was increased by paclobutrazol, resulting in significantly improved bloom and yield the following year. In fruiting-year blueberry, flower bud production was significantly increased by paclobutrazol in the year of application and resulted in improved bloom and yield in the following fruiting year. The effects of the other treatments on these parameters were in most cases not significant. Daminozide showed a significant bloom response with a sprouting-year application, but this did not translate into a yield response. The use of highly feathered trees can make high-density apple plantings more profitable through enhanced precocity and increased early yield. Currently, nurseries are asked to provide highly feathered trees with wide branch crotch angles. The use of plant growth regulators (PGRs) can play a key role when it comes to branch induction; however, dose and timing both need to be tested to enhance branching without compromising other tree quality attributes. Over the last 4 years, we have conducted studies of the use of MaxCel® (6-benzyladenine) and Promalin® (a mixture of 1.8% 6-benzyladenine and 1.8% GA4+7) in comparison with Tiberon™ SC (cyclanilide) at several nurseries in NY, WA, DE, Ontario (Canada), and Chile. The best results were obtained with four applications of MaxCel® or Promalin® (400 mg·L−1) beginning when leader growth reached 70 cm above the soil line and reapplied at 10–14 days intervals. Promalin® was a slightly less effective branching agent than MaxCel®. On the other hand, Promalin® stimulated leader growth resulting in improved final tree height, whereas MaxCel® induced the widest branch angles. Overall, we observed good response and quality ratings with ‘Cameo’, ‘Cripps Pink’, ‘Enterprise’, ‘Fuji’, ‘Ambrosia’, ‘Crimson Crisp’, ‘Gingergold’, and ‘Granny Smith’, whereas less quality ratings were observed on ‘Ambrosia’, ‘Cortland’, ‘Goldrush’, ‘Honeycrisp’, and ‘Suncrisp’. Response with ‘Gala’ varied depending on the temperature range. Multiple sprays of Gibberellins (GA4+7, or GA3) at 250 mg·L−1 applied to nursery trees in the late summer inhibited flower bud development and flowering in the orchard the next year. This reduces the risk of fire blight infection in newly planted trees.

Tagetes is a genus of annual, perennial or herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae. Most of the species have pinnate green leaves. Blooms are naturally occurring in golden, orangeyellow, and white colour, often with maroon highlights. Floral heads are 4 to 6 cm in diameter, generally with both ray florets and disc florets. The present study was conducted at the post graduate research laboratory at Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University to find out the “Effect of plant growth regulators on flowering and yield of African marigold (Tagetes erecta Linn)”. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications. There were ten treatments, viz., GA3 100 ppm, GA3 200 ppm and GA3 300 ppm, NAA 100 ppm, NAA 200 ppm, NAA 300 ppm, Ethrel 50 ppm, Ethrel 100 ppm, and Ethrel 150 ppm and control. Among the growth regulators tried, GA3 200 ppm as foliar application on 30 and 60 days after transplanting registered the highest values for plant characters like plant height (47.1 cm), number of branches ( 35.1), days taken to first flower bud appearance (39.3 days), days taken to flower opening (37.6 days), longevity of flower (11.17 days), stalk length (12.1 cm), diameter of flower (7.8 cm), number of flowers per plant (40.3), weight of the single flower (9.1 g), yield of flowers per plant (337 g) and flower yield per plot (11.1 kg). From the present study, it is recommended that spraying of GA3 200 ppm on 30 and 60 days after transplanting improved yield and quality of African marigold flowers.
