Pleomorphic adenomas are non-malignant tumours originating in epithelium. They are most often found in the parotid gland. Their location apart from the parotid gland is quite rare. That type of tumour is usually treated surgically. The aim of this paper is to describe own observations of the symptoms of pleomorphic adenomas that were not located in the parotid gland. Analysis of the clinical material was based on retrospective assessment of 41 patients hospitalised in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery during the period 1991-2010 because of pleomorphic adenomas located in the small salivary glands. The group consisted of 24 women and 17 men aged between 24 and 79. Tumours were most often round or oval, between 0.7 cm and 3.5 cm and found in the palate area. All patients were treated surgically. Pleomorphic adenomas of small salivary glands, similarly to tumours located in the parotid gland, were more often found in women. Non-symptomatic course of the illness was the main reason behind late diagnosis. Tumours from the group of pleomorphic adenomas originated from small mouth glands were most often found in the hard palate.

Myoepithelial carcinoma is an uncommon tumor of the salivary glands, most commonly the parotid gland. Clear cell myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare variant with an aggressive behavior. Here, we describe a case of clear cell myoepithelial carcinoma arising from the hard palate in an elderly male who underwent resection of the tumor and postop radiation. Posttreatment imaging demonstrated bilateral pulmonary nodules and a C2 body lesion concerning for metastasis. Biopsy of the lung lesions revealed a monomorphous population of optically clear cells with hyperchromatic and pleomorphic nuclei which were morphologically similar to the prior resection specimen. There are few reported cases of clear cell myoepithelial carcinoma arising from the hard palate, and there are even fewer reports on metastases to the lungs. Due to the low number of reported cases, prognosis and treatment of this neoplasm is not well defined.

AbstractSialadenoma papilliferum is a rare, benign exophytic tumour of salivary glands. The preferred site of this tumour is usually the hard palate. A case of sialadenoma papilliferum occurring in the parotid gland of a 49-year-old man is presented; only one such case has been previously described.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant tumor of the salivary glands. This tumor usually occurs in the parotid gland and hard palate but rarely in the buccal region. We report the case of a 51 year old lady with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of left buccal mucosa. She was treated successfully with multimodal treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. MECs have a female predilection and occur most commonly on the hard or soft palate or both and rare in the buccal mucosa.

AbstractObjectives:Patients who survive malignant tumours have an increased risk of second neoplasms, including those of the salivary glands. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland is by far the most common type of second salivary gland tumour; other types have rarely been reported. We describe here two patients with a second tumour of the salivary glands.Case reports:The first patient was a 22-year-old woman with a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland, which developed 21 years after completion of chemoradiotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The second patient was a 40-year-old woman with an epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the buccal mucosa, which arose 11 years after treatment for two malignant neoplasms – retroperitoneal liposarcoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Conclusions:It is mandatory that survivors of cancer should be monitored carefully, so that the complications related to their previous disease and therapy are detected early and managed properly.

ABSTRACT Pleomorphic adenoma is a common, benign tumor arising from the major salivary glands, most commonly from the parotid gland. In addition, they may also occur in the minor salivary glands of the hard and soft palate. Intranasal pleomorphic adenomas are unusual and may be misdiagnosed because they have greater myoepithelial cellularity and fewer myxoid stromata compared to those elsewhere. We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the nasal cavity arising from the nasal septum.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a relatively uncommon tumour of salivary, glands and is characterised by a prolonged clinical course and a fatal outcome. It was first described as `cylindroma' by Billroth in 1859. Half of these tumors occur in glandular tissues other than the major salivary glands; principally in the hard palate, but they can also arise in the tongue and minor salivary glands. Unusual locations include the external auditory canal, nasopharynx, lacrimal glands, breast, vulva, esophagus, cervix and Cowper glands. The long natural history of this tumor and its tendency for local recurrence are well known. JMS 2012;15(1):76-77.

Intraductal carcinomas are rare, malignant tumors that arise from the salivary glands. They commonly grow from the parotid gland and no cases growing from the parapharyngeal space have been reported to date. We report a 76-year-old man who was inadvertently found to have a parapharyngeal lesion by CT scans and MR imaging. The tumor was resected through an upper neck approach and diagnosed histopathologically as intraductal carcinoma. As far as we are aware, this is the first case of intraductal carcinoma arising from the parapharyngeal space. Here, we describe the management of this disease together with a review of the relevant literature.

AbstractThe ultrastructural, X-ray microanalytical, histochemical and immunocytochemi-cal features of intraluminal crystalloids found in adenocarcinomas of the parotid gland have been studied. The crystalloids, putatively derived from an abnormal crystalization of salivary duct proteins, are considerably different from the crystalloids found in normal parotid glands, pleomorphic adenomas, and sialocysts.

Mammary mixed tumours are the most frequent neoplasias in female dogs. In humans, mixed tumours are frequently found in the salivary glands and are known as pleomorphic adenomas. In addition to their histomorphologic similarities, mixed tumours and pleomorphic adenomas have the potential to become malignant and give rise to carcinomas in mixed tumours and carcinomas ex-pleomorphic adenoma, respectively. The factors associated with malignant transformation are still poorly known in the case of canine mixed tumours. However, this form of neoplasia tends to be associated with a better prognosis than other malignant histological types. This paper discusses the main features associated with female canine mammary mixed tumours.
