AbstractThe synthetic sex pheromone (dicastalure) of the red bollworm of cotton, Diparopsis castanea Hmps., in Central and Southern Africa, and an inhibitor of male sexual attraction (trans-9-dodecenyl acetate,=IIA), were used in an enclosed 0·2 ha cotton field-cage to reduce successful female matings. Over one month dicastalure at 21·0 and 42·3 g/ha produced average reductions in mating of 47·9% and 72·5% respectively and 37·9 g IIA/ha produced an overall reduction in mating of 71·5%, or 79·5% in released moth populations, over the same period. The proportion of virgin females present in disruption situations was significantly greater than in untreated populations and was density-independent for moth populations of up to 2 200/ha. The proportion of fertile eggs in disruption situations was correspondingly reduced to 30·2% from an average of 67·9% in control cycles. Reduction in sex pheromone trap catches is an unsatisfactory indicator of the extent to which males are prevented from inseminating females and considerably over-estimates the true degree of disruption. This is the first time that a naturally occurring inhibitor has been used successfully to disrupt mating in a field population of insects and it indicates the potential of the method for the control of high density pest populations in cotton. However, use of polyethylene dispensing mechanisms similar to those used in the field-cage disruption experiments would be unsuitable as a practical method of dispensing behaviour modifying chemicals and it is suggested that, for suitably controlled release of such chemicals, currently available microencapsulation technology offers the best prospects.

AbstractTwice as many larvae of the dark-sided cutworm, Euxoa messoria Harr., were found in rye fall-seeded tobacco field plots than in winter-fallowed tobacco field plots. There were corresponding differences in numbers of injured tobacco plants. Cutworm aggregations were more prominent in the winter rye than in the winter fallowed area of the tobacco field with low populations of dark-sided cutworms.Larvae of the variegated cutworm, Peridroma saucia Hbn., appeared 2 to 4 weeks later than dark-sided cutworm larvae and winter cultural methods had little effect on their numbers.

AbstractIntensive studies on the damage and losses of flue-cured tobacco caused by the dark-sided cutworm, Euxoa messoria (Harris), were carried out in the field at Delhi, Ont., during 1967 and 1968. A new method for estimating the accurate tobacco crop losses is illustrated. Assessment of damage of the tobacco plant and the population density in relation to the yield are described. The yield was significantly related, negatively, to the dark-sided cutworm density, and was reduced in the cutworm-damaged blocks in comparison with the yield in the undamaged check blocks. Assessment of average losses caused by the species was 17% of marketable tobacco, which, based on the average current prices, would amount to 200 dollars per acre or approximately 25 million dollars over the country as a whole every year.

Abstract Tomato plants host various herbivores, including the Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), recently introduced into South and Central America. It is a harmful pest for tomato crops, damaging mainly the flowers and fruits. The assessment of losses and the establishment of economic injury level (EIL) and economic threshold (ET) are core steps toward establishing a control program. We determined losses caused by H. armigera on processing tomato and estimated EIL/ET values. Trials were run during two growing seasons using tomato plants caged in the field. The field cage experiment consisted of six densities of H. armigera second instar larvae (0, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 larvae per row meter) at two infestations periods spaced 15 d apart with the first infestation done 90 d after transplanting. The larvae were placed individually on the third upper fully developed leaf. The number of healthy and damaged fruits, size, and weight of the fruits were measured. Yield losses as a function of infestation of 1–24 larvae per row meter ranged from 4 to 34% and resulted in a yield reduction of 1.22–12.77 kg per row meter. The EIL ranged from 1.41 to 1.72 and from 2.11 to 2.58 larvae per row meter of plants in 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons, respectively. Helicoverpa armigera causes significant reduction of tomato yield. These EIL values will enable better control decision-making in processing tomato.
