Powdery mildew is one of the most commom foliar diseases of cultivated and wild cucurbits worldwide. Six different fungal species have been reported to be associated with powdery mildew of cucurbits, such as Podosphaera xanthii and Golovinomyces cichoracearum. The aim of the study was to identify the causal agent of the disease in watermelon plants (Citrullus lanatus) cultivated in greenhouses of the State of São Paulo. DNA total was extracted using Chelex method and the ITS region was amplified via standard PCR reaction using the specific primers PMITS1 and PMITS2. A fragment of 700pb was amplified and the sequence showed 99% of identity with P. xanthii (accession number JQ728480). Morphological observation showed that the conidia were ellipsoidal-ovoid, had fibrosin bodies and a bifurcated germinative tube in the lateral position. These characteristics and the molecular analyses confirmed P. xanthi as the etiological agent of powdery mildew in watermelon plants in São Paulo State. Rocio virus (ROCV) was responsible for an explosive encephalitis epidemic in the 1970s affecting about 1,000 residents of 20 coastland counties in São Paulo State, Brazil. ROCV was first isolated in 1975 from the cerebellum of a fatal human case of encephalitis. Clinical manifestations of the illness are similar to those described for St. Louis encephalitis. ROCV shows intense antigenic cross-reactivity with Japanese encephalitis complex (JEC) viruses, particularly with Ilheus (ILHV), St. Louis encephalitis, Murray Valley and West Nile viruses. In this study, we report a specific RT-PCR assay for ROCV diagnosis and the molecular characterization of the SPAn37630 and SPH37623 strains. Partial nucleotide sequences of NS5 and E genes determined from both strains were used in phylogenetic analysis. The results indicated that these strains are closely related to JEC viruses, but forming a distinct subclade together with ILHV, in accordance with results recently reported by Medeiros et al. (2007).

ABSTRACT In Brazil, specifically in São Paulo State, there are guidelines based on the high diversity of tropical forests that instructs the restoration projects in the state (current SMA 32/2014). The main goal of this study was verify the importance and effectiveness of the high diversity of arboreal species originated from a reforestation, and its influence in a woody regenerating composition. We developed a phytosociologic study in a woody regenerating stratum of a nine year old reforestation at a Private Reserve of Natural Heritage (RPPN), in Mogi-Guaçu, São Paulo State. All specimens with height > 30 cm and Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) < 5 cm were evaluated. The woody regenerating diversity was smaller than the overstory diversity and the species composition was similar to the overstory. The Simpson index (1-D) was 0.85, Shannon index (H') was 2.46 and the Pielou index (J') was 0.60. The zoochoric dispersion syndrome was major among the species. Our results suggest that the use of high diversity of native seedlings in a reforestation leads to high diversity of species in woody regeneration stratum, after one decade of planting.
