An interacting particle system made of diffusion processes with local interaction is considered and the macroscopic limit to a nonlinear PDE is investigated. Few rigorous results exists on this problem and in particular the explicit form of the nonlinearity is not known. This paper reviews this subject, some of the main ideas to get the limit nonlinear PDE and provides both heuristic and numerical informations on the precise form of the nonlinearity which are new with respect to the literature and coherent with the few known informations.

AbstractWe review recent rigorous results on the phenomenon of vortex reconnection in classical and quantum fluids. In the context of the Navier–Stokes equations in $$\mathbb {T}^3$$ T 3 we show the existence of global smooth solutions that exhibit creation and destruction of vortex lines of arbitrarily complicated topologies. Concerning quantum fluids, we prove that for any initial and final configurations of quantum vortices, and any way of transforming one into the other, there is an initial condition whose associated solution to the Gross–Pitaevskii equation realizes this specific vortex reconnection scenario. Key to prove these results is an inverse localization principle for Beltrami fields and a global approximation theorem for the linear Schrödinger equation.

Integer-spin Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains are expected to have a singlet groundstate and a gap to the first excited state, as first argued by Haldane. We review rigorous results on this conjecture and discuss experimental realizations. Theoretical and experimental aspects of three recent developments in this field are then reviewed: chainend excitations and the non-local order parameter, a field theory mapping and behavior near zero wave-vector, high-field behavior and one-dimensional Bose condensation.
