Palaran are elements within gamelan repertoire that are derived from the melodies used to recite texts written in Javanese poetic metres. When used as palaran within gamelan performance (rather than in their original form as poetic recitation, or macapat), these melodies are supported and constrained by a metrically fixed structure of core instrumental notes and surrounded by a web of spontaneous melodic accompaniment, involving multiple musicians. This chapter explores the complex ways in which musicians control, negotiate, and coordinate timing in this flexible yet precise form of musical interaction. It examines the rules of ideal cohesive performance, the transmission of strategies for successfully learning how to achieve this, and what can be learnt from occasions when palaran go wrong and the coordination of timing goes awry. It then argues that the sense of risk involved in managing timing in these ways is a significant part of what makes palaran one of the most popular elements within the gamelan repertoire.

Nuclease-directed genome editing is a powerful tool for investigating physiology and has great promise as a therapeutic approach to correct mutations that cause disease. In its most precise form, genome editing can use cellular homology-directed repair (HDR) pathways to insert information from an exogenously supplied DNA repair template (donor) directly into a targeted genomic location. Unfortunately, particularly for long insertions, toxicity and delivery considerations associated with repair template DNA can limit HDR efficacy. Here, we explore chemical modifications to both double-stranded and single-stranded DNA-repair templates. We describe 5′-terminal modifications, including in its simplest form the incorporation of triethylene glycol (TEG) moieties, that consistently increase the frequency of precision editing in the germlines of three animal models (Caenorhabditis elegans, zebrafish, mice) and in cultured human cells.

Abstract In this paper, we study the general form of three-point functions of conserved current multiplets Sα(k) = S(α1…αk) of arbitrary rank in four-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 superconformal theory. We find that the correlation function of three such operators $$ \left\langle {\overline{S}}_{\dot{\alpha}(k)}\left({z}_1\right){S}_{\beta \left(k+l\right)}\left({z}_2\right){\overline{S}}_{\dot{\gamma}(l)}\left({z}_3\right)\right\rangle $$ S ¯ α ̇ k z 1 S β k + l z 2 S ¯ γ ̇ l z 3 is fixed by the superconformal symmetry up to a single complex coefficient though the precise form of the correlator depends on the values of k and l. In addition, we present the general structure of mixed correlators of the form $$ \left\langle {\overline{S}}_{\dot{\alpha}(k)}\left({z}_1\right){S}_{\alpha (k)}\left({z}_2\right)L\left({z}_3\right)\right\rangle $$ S ¯ α ̇ k z 1 S α k z 2 L z 3 and $$ \left\langle {\overline{S}}_{\dot{\alpha}(k)}\left({z}_1\right){S}_{\alpha (k)}\left({z}_2\right){J}_{\gamma \dot{\gamma}}\left({z}_3\right)\right\rangle $$ S ¯ α ̇ k z 1 S α k z 2 J γ γ ̇ z 3 , where L is the flavour current multiplet and $$ {J}_{\gamma \dot{\gamma}} $$ J γ γ ̇ is the supercurrent.

The presence of πίστις in the list of spiritual gifts in1 Cor 12:8-10 is problematic. Should not faith be the common basis of the charisms and not a particular gift? What means “faith” in 1 Cor 12:9, given that Paul includes it among the nine manifestations of the Spirit? How to understand and to translate it? Evidently, “faith” points here not simple adherence, but a very precise form of πίστις. In fact, Paul places wisdom, knowledge and “faith” in rapid succession, making them the three principal dimensions of the teaching charisms. As reflected in the repetition of the same gifts in the sequence of 13:2. Some Jewish texts talk about rabbis able to change the point of view of people whose convictions were as immovable as a mountain. They were nicknamed “mountain mover” (oker harim). Thanks to the support of rabbinic literature it becomes possible to explain the presence of πίστις among the teaching gifts in 1 Cor 12:9 and 13:2, offering a translation, certainly broad but more attentive to the semantics of the charism of faith: “if I have all the ability to deliver discourses of faith from which to convince people as immovable as mountains, but I do not have charity, I am nothing”.

This article entitled 'Postmodern and Post Structuralism: A Literary Dichotomy' has fairly attempted to compare and contrast between the most discussed and comprehensive notions of postmodernism and post structuralism in a possible precise form. In addition, the study focuses on dichotomies of these trends against their respective pre-forms, 'modernism' and 'structuralism' as well. Their tendencies in literary creation and theory have been briefly discussed. The study method it has availed is essentially the qualitative research design which is concerned with establishing answers to 'why' and 'how' of the study in question. The writing is based on the views on the foreign writers, scholars and critics in different published materials or the online resources. The views forwarded by the aforementioned personalities have been duly considered and cited in both types of citations-direct as well as paraphrased versions. This study has followed the comparison and contrast as its theory. After the discussion or analysis, the findings have been deducted that these two terms are confusing especially for the beginners because there are certain similarities as well as dissimilarities between them in specific cases. The study is expected to be helpful for both the teacher and students of literature especially in the field pedagogy or the individuals who are not directly related to pedagogical issue.

Patricia Highsmith’s anti-hero Tom Ripley, who first appears in her 1955 novel The Talented Mr Ripley, is made the focal point of this concluding chapter. Among Ripley’s more obvious talents is his ability to impersonate others, this being pursued to an extreme degree as he murders, and then takes on the identity of, his friend Dickie Greenleaf. Analysing Ripley’s imposture of Dickie through the lens of performativity theory (Austin and Derrida), this chapter demonstrates why this is an apt way of reflecting upon the previous chapters of the book for three reasons. Firstly, rather than focusing solely upon identifications as constative utterances which verify a pre-existing identity, this book has interpreted them as modes which perform identities in specific ways. Secondly, these performances are deeply connected to the precise form of an identification technique but are also determined by the contexts in which techniques arise and individual identifications take place. Thirdly, the book concludes by emphasising how it is the performativity of narrative prose which is at the heart of the connections traced in the preceding pages. Literature performs identities that reflect but also project and imagine what identity is and could be: subjectivity is not represented in literature, it is constituted by its forms. In this sense, the importance of literature to this project is the fact that it is only in its realm that the truly performative nature of identificatory methods can be seen.

In this chapter, the author aims to explain the theoretical basis of this book. In doing so, there is a need to look at several key areas. He starts by defining conversation strategies and showing how they differ from and are related to more generalised communication strategies. Next, he defines communicative competence (Hymes, 1972) and shows why this theory should still provide an important basis for developing the teaching of conversation within a communicative teaching framework, whichever precise form that takes. Following this, he explores why we might teach conversation strategies as a means of helping to develop communicative competence. Finally, he gives one brief example of how this might look in the classroom.

Abstract The precise form of internalization of the provisions of the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities in domestic law is crucial in ensuring its long-term effectiveness. Experiences in the Western Balkans raise important questions about the role of minority (or community) rights legislation in deeply divided societies. This article uses the case-studies of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and the Republic of North Macedonia to highlight key themes and limitations that have emerged. Comparative analysis reveals a surprising divergence of approaches to internalization in the region. The article further demonstrates that the ‘nation-cum-state paradigm’ remains prevalent, despite the premise of universality. It argues that such legislation can play an important symbolic and practical role, but that legal internalization needs to be seen as an ongoing process. It concludes that attention needs to be given to ensuring the continued particularization and adaptation of such legislation in light of both the limitations and changing circumstances, providing a key lesson also for other divided societies.

AbstractWe study decoherence effects on mixing among three generations of neutrinos. We show that in presence of a non-diagonal dissipation matrix, both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can violate the CPT symmetry and the oscillation formulae depend on the parametrization of the mixing matrix. We reveal the CP violation in the transitions preserving the flavor, for a certain form of the dissipator. In particular, for such dissipators, the CP violation affects all the transitions in the case of Majorana neutrinos, unlike Dirac neutrinos which still preserve the CP symmetry in one of the transitions flavor preserving. The precise form of the dissipation matrix is not known a-priori as it depends on the nature of the phenomenon that originates it. However, our theoretical results show that decoherence effects, if exist for neutrinos, could allow to reveal the neutrino nature and to test fundamental symmetries.
