We give the estimates of approximation errors while approximating of a positive operator $A$ in a Banach space by analytic vectors. Our main results are formulated in the form of Bernstein and Jackson type inequalities with explicitly calculated constants. We consider the classes of invariant subspaces ${\mathcal E}_{q,p}^{\nu,\alpha}(A)$ of analytic vectors of $A$ and the special scale of approximation spaces $\mathcal {B}_{q,p,\tau}^{s,\alpha}(A)$ associated with the complex degrees of positive operator. The approximation spaces are determined by $E$-functional, that plays a similar role as the module of smoothness. We show that the approximation spaces can be considered as interpolation spaces generated by $K$-method of real interpolation. The constants in the Bernstein and Jackson type inequalities are expressed using the normalization factor.

Abstract The present paper deals with fractional powers of positive operators in a Banach space. The main theorem concerns the structure of fractional powers of positive operators in fractional spaces. As applications, the structure of fractional powers of elliptic operators is studied.

In [2], R. Loewy and H. Schneider studied positive linear operators on circular cones. They characterised the extremal positive operators on these cones and noticed that such operators preserve the set of extreme rays of the cone in this case. They then conjectured that this property of extremal positive operators is true in general.

We establish a spectral characterization theorem for the operators on complex Hilbert spaces of arbitrary dimensions that attain their norm on every closed subspace. The class of these operators is not closed under addition. Nevertheless, we prove that the intersection of these operators with the positive operators forms a proper cone in the real Banach space of hermitian operators.

Talagrand has shown [4, p. 76] that there exists a continuous linear operator from L1[0, 1] to c0 which is not a Dunford-Pettis operator. In contrast to this result, Gretsky and Ostroy [2] have recently proved that every positive operator from L[0, 1] to c0 is a Dunford-Pettis operator, hence that every regular operator between these spaces (i.e. a difference of positive operators) is Dunford-Pettis.

The differential equationu'(t)+Au(t)=f(t)(−∞<t<∞)in a general Banach spaceEwith the strongly positive operatorAis ill-posed in the Banach spaceC(E)=C(ℝ,E)with norm‖ϕ‖C(E)=sup−∞<t<∞‖ϕ(t)‖E. In the present paper, the well-posedness of this equation in the Hölder spaceCα(E)=Cα(ℝ,E)with norm‖ϕ‖Cα(E)=sup−∞<t<∞‖ϕ(t)‖E+sup−∞<t<t+s<∞(‖ϕ(t+s)−ϕ(t)‖E/sα),0<α<1, is established. The almost coercivity inequality for solutions of the Rothe difference scheme inC(ℝτ,E)spaces is proved. The well-posedness of this difference scheme inCα(ℝτ,E)spaces is obtained.

An operator acting on a Banach space is said to be unicellular if its lattice of invariant subspaces is totally ordered by inclusion. Each weighted shift on a sequence space has a natural totally ordered set of invariant subspaces, and is unicellular if these are its only invariant subspaces.
