RESUMO Neste trabalho tenta-se compreender o autoexílio de Gabriela Mistral como uma experiência fundamental na sua vida, o que lhe permitiu criar movimentos compreendidos metaforicamente na figura de danças de roda. As rodas apresentam uma possibilidade de releitura, em termos simbólicos e políticos, da figura e da obra de Mistral, pois permitem pôr em tensão algumas das leituras oficiais que se fizeram delas. Compreendem-se as rodas como espaço de resistência, onde Mistral uniu diferentes vozes (alheias e próprias) para criar seus cantos e dançar nessa união com outros(as), estabelecendo diferentes conexões, por meio de suas viagens, interações, escrita de si e das mensagens como Recados que entregava na roda, as quais transmitiam suas experiências e enviavam convites para sentir, refletir e circular.

When, on November sixteenth last, the newspapers announced the awarding of the Nobel Prize for literature to a Chilean poetess, Gabriela Mistral, the news came as a surprise to many Americans, who, although they considered themselves well read, had never heard her name. The fundamental reason we know so little of this remarkable woman who enjoys such a great popularity in the Spanish-speaking world, not only for her words but for her deeds, is because the limited number of her poems which have been translated into English, by heavy hands, for the most part, allow hardly a glimmer of the real Mistral to shine through them. Of course, all translation of poetry is difficult but that of Gabriela extremely so because of her unique selection of words. She has created a plant that does not grow on English soil.

The three versions of Ian Campbell’s poem about Valle de Elqui (in Chile) presented here comprise a poem he first wrote in Spanish, then in English and finally in a more powerful version in Indonesian, which was published in 2012 in the literary pages of the Jakarta mass media daily Kompas. Campbell regards this whole process as emblematic of his explorations in trilingual poetics, namely what does a ‘concept’/poem idea look like if done in the three languages with which he has some degree of written knowledge or fluency: English, Spanish, Indonesian. This mirrors the ‘three-pronged’ title ‘Selatan-Sur-South’ that he adopted for the collection of his poetry in PORTAL vol. 5, no. 1, 2008. The Indonesian version, ‘Lembah Elqui, ‘was included in Campbell’s poetry and prose collection Tak ada Peringatan (Vivid Publishing, 2013). In each version now the reference is to Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957), Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature (1945), whose burial place lies in Monte Grande in the Valle de Elqui in northern Chile.
