Fernandesia meridionalis Rodrigues & Maia, a new genus and species of Cecidomyiidae associated with Myrciaria delicatula O. Berg (Myrtaceae) is described and illustrated (male, female, pupa, and larva) based on material from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new genus belongs to Lasiopteridi, but it cannot be placed to tribe. A key to the tribes of Lasiopteridi and one to the unplaced genera of Neotropical Lasiopteridi are given.

Horvathinia pelocoroides Montandon, 1911 was described as a new genus and species based on two specimens collected in Brazil, one from Minas Gerais deposited in the Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet (Stockholm) and the other from Rio Grande do Sul deposited in the Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum (Budapest) (Montandon 1911). Subsequently, nine additional species were described based on a single specimen each, collected at different localities in southern South America: H. doellojuradoi De Carlo, 1930; H. pelleranoi De Carlo, 1930; H. castilloi De Carlo, 1938; H. meyeri De Carlo, 1938; H. bollei De Carlo, 1958; H. lenti De Carlo, 1958; H. schubarti De Carlo, 1958; H. forsteri Lauck, 1958; and H. argemii Schnack, 1972 (Schnack & Estévez 2005).

A new genus, Segesta, is described based on nymphs from the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The genus is related to Thraulodes, Massartellopsis, Meridialaris and Secochela as indicated by the posterolateral spines on abdominal segments 2 to 9, by the long lanceolate gills present on segments 1 to 7, tarsal claws without a large subapical denticle, and general shape of clypeus and labrum. However, the new genus can be distinguished from those related genera by the maxillary and labial palps that are very large and remarkably curved, a shape unique among the Neotropical Atalophlebiinae not belonging to the Hermanella-group.

Brasilochondria riograndensis gen. nov., sp. nov. (Copepoda, Chondracanthidae) a parasite of the flounder, Paralichthys orbignyanus (Valenciennes, 1839), is described. The new genus has a spherical head a post-mandibular "neck" and two pairs of modified biramous legs. In these respects, it resembles Argentinochondria patagonensis Etchegoin, Timi & Sardella, 2003. In the Argentine genus, however, the bulbous head has a medial constriction and the posterior of the female lacks the lateral extensions that are present in the new genus. Pseudolernentoma brasiliensis Luque & Alves, 2003, also resembles the new genus but it lacks the lateral extensions of the trunk and the latter is cylindrical rather than flat. The second leg of the new genus is small and the endopod is shorter than the exopod. The other two genera have large second legs with subequal rami.

Ditaxodon taeniatus is a striped, racer-like colubrid snake inhabiting grassland savannas in southern Brazil. This species was described as Philodryas taeniatus by the then curator of the Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (formerly Zoologisches Museum Berlin, ZMB), Wilhelm Peters, from a single specimen collected by Reinhold Hensel in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Peters’ description was published in a paper by Hensel (1868: 331) and, according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999: Article 50.1, Recommendation 51E), the correct citation is Ditaxodon taeniatus (Peters in Hensel, 1868). Later, George A. Boulenger (1896: 124) transferred Philodryas taeniatus to the genus Conophis, and Alphonse R. Hoge (1958: 54) created for it the new genus Ditaxodon, which remains monotypic today.

In the present work we describe the first occurrence of the genus Orthophytum (Bromeliaceae, Bromelioideae) and of the species Tillandsia paraibensis within the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern Brazil. Both taxa were recorded on inselbergs in areas of caatinga. These findings are important, improving the knowledge of the Flora of Rio Grande do Norte and giving a better understand of the biogeography of Brazilian bromeliads.

AbstractThe lichenicolous fungi growing on Graphidales hosts in Florida are revised, mainly based on collections by the second author (R. C.). Twenty-one species are recognized. The new genus and species Lawreya glyphidiphila is described for a common asexual fungus growing on Glyphis scyphulifera and more rarely Trypethelium eluteriae, characterized by black stromatic conidiomata in which subspherical conidiogenous loculi develop, producing aseptate, subglobose, brown conidia. Nine additional new species are described: Amerosporiopsis phaeographidis (on Phaeographis brasiliensis), Arthonia acanthotheciicola (on Acanthothecis floridensis), A. subgraphidicola (on Graphis assimilis), Hemigrapha graphidicola (on G. assimilis), Skyttea graphidicola (on Graphis spp.), Strigula graphidicola (on G. assimilis), S. perparvula (on Graphidales), Talpapellis graphidis (on Graphis caesiella) and Tremella wedinii (on Glyphis scyphulifera). Phylogenetic placements of Lawreya glyphidiphila, Skyttea graphidicola and Tremella wedinii are presented. Identification keys are given for the species of Cornutispora and Talpapellis, and for the 66 species known to grow on Graphidales hosts worldwide.

The new genus Neodrassex is proposed to include two new species of Gnaphosidae from Brazil. Neodrassex aureus sp. nov. is described from Amazonas, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul states, and N. iguatemi sp. nov. is described from Paraná state. Neodrassex gen. nov. is characterized by small size, pale coloration, large anterior median eyes surrounded by black pigmentation, absence of a dorsal abdominal scutum in males and by the cheliceral dentition with 2-3 teeth on the promargin and 2-4 on the retromargin. The new genus is tentatively placed at the Leptodrassex group.

A new genus and species of glandulocaudine, Lophiobrycon weitzmani, is described based on specimens collected in headwater tributary streams of the rio Grande, upper rio Paraná system, State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The inclusion of the new species in the phylogeny of the subfamily Glandulocaudinae proposed by Weitzman & Menezes (1998), reveals a sister group relationship between the new genus and the monophyletic group composed of Glandulocauda and Mimagoniates that currently form the tribe Glandulocaudini. The new species can be readily distinguished from all other species of the tribe by the autapomorphic presence in adult male individuals (with more than 23.9 mm standard length) of an adipose-fin whose base extends for almost the entire distance between the posterior terminus of the base of the dorsal fin and the base of the upper lobe of the caudal fin and averages approximately 25% standard length, along with the presence of globular expansions formed by the lepidotrichia and hypertrophied soft tissue in the middle portions of the first and second pectoral-fin rays. The diagnosis of the tribe Glandulocaudini is modified to accommodate the new genus.

In the survey of polypores from Morro Santana, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, accomplished from March 2007 to March 2009, 44 species were identified. Identification keys and remarks about all the species are given. Full descriptions and illustrations of Datronia caperata, Junghuhnia polycystidifera, Oxyporus obducens, Phellinus umbrinellus, Phylloporia frutica and Tinctoporellus epimiltinus are presented. Tinctoporellus epimiltinus is a new records from Rio Grande do Sul.

The gall of Pisphondylia brasiliensis on Guapira opposita, itsfemale and pupa are described and illustrated. The geographic distribution of this species is now widened to Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). For the first time, a female of the genusis described.
