Beaucarnea olsonii is described and illustrated from tropical deciduous forests of SW Puebla, Mexico. The new species can be distinguished from other Beaucarnea species by its massively swollen base that abruptly tapers into slender branches, by its conspicuously long stigma, and by its pedicel articulation that occurs at 2/3 of the length of the pedicel below the flower. With this new addition, the total number of endemic species of Beaucarnea for Mexico increases to 10, making this country the greatest center of diversification and endemism for the genus. We also provide a distribution map and a conservation status recommendation for the new species, as well as a key to the Beaucarnea species of southern central Mexico.

The genus Platycoelia Dejean was recently revised (Smith 2003) but a new species was discovered afterward in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France. With the addition of this new species, the genus Platycoelia now contains 63 species. Platycoelia is distributed from central Mexico to northern Argentina with most species occurring in middle and high elevational regions of the Andes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the new species, amend a couplet in the previously published key to Platycoelia to incorporate this new species, and to make additional comments and corrections to my 2003 revision.

We describe a new species of a wild Mexican Opuntia producer of edible acidic prickly pears (xoconostles), locally known as “xoconostle de cerro blanco“ (white hillside xoconostle), based on external morphology and micromorphology attributes (mainly characters of the spines). This species is morphologically compared with another four species of wild xoconostles distributed in the same region: O. joconostle, O. leiascheinvariana, O. oligacantha and O. matudae. A taxonomic key for the xoconostles of the area is provided. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of one chloroplast gene, one plastid intergenic spacer and one nuclear molecular marker, the new species was recognized as a monophyletic group within Opuntia s.s. sensu Majure et al.

Recent botanical explorations in Sierra Madre Occidental in Durango, Mexico, led to the discovery of a new species which according to its morphology belongs to Salvia sect. Brandegeia. The new taxon is morphologically most similar to S. oresbia from central Mexico, against which it is thoroughly compared. Additionally, it is presented a synopsis of the section in order to provide updated and standardized descriptions for those species known only in base to their protologues, which allows a more detailed and precise comparison in respect to the new species. The morphological examination of the species in the section also revealed that the recognition of S. sharpii as a distinct species from S. blepharophylla is not justified; consequently, it is reduced to synonymy. An identification key, a distribution map, photographs, and a drawing of the new species are also presented.

Neurosystasis Satchell is newly recorded in Mexico by means of the description of a new species. Specimens captured in a tropical deciduous forest in southern Puebla, central Mexico, were examined and determined as a species new to science. The male and female are described based on morphological characteristics. Neurosystasis longistylis sp. nov. is similar in appearance to Neurosystasis saltenia (Omad, Mangudo & Gleiser, 2015), but is readily distinguished based on characters of the head, wing, and male genitalia. In both species, R2+3 is attached to vein R4, the wing membrane is infuscate with dark spots on vein apices, and lacks sensory organs near the apex of Sc, characters not present in other species of Neurosystasis, and for that reasons we proposed the recovery of Chuspilepia from its synonym and validate it as a subgenus of Neurosystasis to include both continental species.

A new species of truffle, T.aztecorum, is described from central Mexico. Tuberaztecorum can be distinguished from other related Tuber species synoptically by a combination of morphological features including ascospore size, pellis cells with irregular thickness, cystidia, ascoma colour and associated host (Abiesreligiosa an endemic Abies species from central Mexico); sequence variation on the ITS rDNA also distinguishes T.aztecorum from related species. A phylogenetic analysis of the ITS rDNA demonstrates that T.aztecorum belongs to the Maculatum clade and is unique from other similar small, white-cream coloured Tuber species distributed in north-eastern Mexico such as T.castilloi and T.guevarai.
