This paper analyzes numerically the two-dimensional laminar jet issued from a skew-symmetrical orifice such as the restriction of spool valves generally used in hydraulic power systems. The flow exerts axially directed forces on the valve. Consequently, it is very important to estimate these forces since they strongly affect the performance of the valve. The analysis assumes that the flow is two-dimensional, steady, incompressible and laminar. The flow pattern was derived numerically using a type of streamline coordinate system developed by one of the authors. The following conclusions were obtained: (1) The jet angle increases with the Reynolds number; (2) The jet width decreases as the Reynolds number increases; (3) The streamline coordinate system used proved to be very useful for deriving flows that have free surfaces.
