Relevance. In the arid conditions of the lower Volga region, studies were conducted to identify different response rates of CMS lines of grain sorghum in order to use them in the selection of hybrids for resistance to abiotic stressors.Material and methods. The adaptive capacity of maternal forms was studied on the example of 12 CMS lines (obtained using sterility sources A1, A2, A3, A4, M-351A, 9E) at the experimental field of institute in 2014–2018. The plot area is 7.7 m2. The density of standing plants is 100 thousand plant/ha. Repeatability in the experience — three times. The calculation of adaptability indicators was carried out using the program for statistical processing of experimental data Agros 2.09.Results. It is established that the formation of a biomass productivity of sterile lines, the predominant influence of the interaction of genotype with year terms, which amounted to 58.2 per cent, while the factors of genotype and the year conditions contribute 31,0 and 10.8%, respectively. At the same time, the influence of the hydrothermal coefficient for the period of “germination-maturation” of sorghum on the productivity of biomass is confirmed by a positive linear relationship (y = 1,903x + 13.90). Among the studied forms, CMS lines A1 O-Yang 1 and A2 Tamara with a biomass yield of 10.33–14.08 t/ha are characterized by high stress resistance and average variability of the trait. Highyielding female forms A3 Feterita 14 and A1 Efremovskoe 2 (18.34–20.71 t/ha) have high indicators of stability index (3.97–6.30), genetic flexibility (16.55–20.70), which indicates their greater adaptability to the arid conditions of the region. These sterile lines are recommended to be included in the program of crosses when creating productive F1 hybrids.

In the breeding process of agricultural crops, including sorghum, the use of multivariate statistics methods makes it possible to determine the correlation between morphometric traits, yield elements and biochemical parameters of grain in the model population, as well as to identify the load of hypothetical factors. The purpose of the current study was to identify the correlations between morphometric traits, yield elements and biochemical parameters of grain, which characterize the load of hypothetical factors in the model grain sorghum population. For practical breeding process, there have been analyzed 13 economically valuable traits in 27 grain sorghum varieties, developed by the FSBSI Russian Research and Project-technological Institute of sorghum and maize “Rossorgo”. There has been established a different variation degree of the traits of grain sorghum; a strong variation degree was established for such traits as ‘flag leaf area’, ‘the largest leaf area’, ‘panicle stem’, ‘productive tilling capacity’, ‘weight and number of grains per panicle’ (27.3–35.2%); a weak variation degree was established for such traits as ‘protein percentage’ and ‘starch content’ in grain (2.8–8.6%). The group with an average degree of variation includes the traits ‘plant height’ after 30 days of growing and at ripening period, ‘panicle length’, ‘1000-grain weight’, and ‘grain yield’ (10.1–15.6%). When analyzing the matrix of correlation coefficients, there were calculated the hypothetical factors with a contribution of more than 5% to the accumulated variance. There has been built a correlation pleiad, which made it possible to demonstrate mean (r = 0.51–0.68) and strong (r = 0.76–0.94) correlations. There have been considered six hypothetical factors reflecting the total contribution to the accumulated variance, Z-1 – 40.86%, Z-2 – 13.76%, Z-3 – 11.85%, Z-4 – 8.74%, Z- 5 – 6.69%, Z-6 – 5.99%. The first hypothetical factor is determined by such traits as ‘the largest leaf area’ and ‘flag leaf area’ (0.78–0.80), ‘weight and number of grains per panicle’ (0.84–0.91), ‘grain productivity’ (0.77) and ‘productive tillering capacity’ (- 0.78). The results obtained are used in breeding programs to develop grain sorghum varieties and hybrids adapted to the arid conditions of the Lower Volga region.

The article presents the results of experimental work on assessing the yield of sunflower hybrids of different ripeness groups when the levels of mineral nutrition change in the arid conditions of the Lower Volga region. It was found out  that due to a small amount of vegetation precipitation and an acute moisture deficit in the second half of the growing season, the highest yield of oilseeds in the Saratov Left Bank is formed by hybrids of early maturing sunflower groups. Of the studied hybrids, the early ripening hybrid Svetlana (2.43 t / ha) was distinguished by the highest yield in arid conditions, the mid-early - EU Savana (2.02 t / ha) and the mid-season - EU Generalis SL (2.14 t / ha). It was revealed that the content of fat in oilseeds increases markedly from early maturing to mid-early and then mid-season sunflower hybrids - from 46.2–52.9 to 48.6–54.4 and up to 51.2–55.4%, respectively. At the same time, the maximum oil content was in variants  with the application of mineral fertilizers.
