At the 1975 annual Technical Writers' Institute of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a panel was conducted dealing with the concerns of technical writers. We are reviewing some of the questions asked by those attending from government and industry and some of the discussion that followed.

Apparatus for measuring changes in the received intensity of 18–Mc/s cosmic noise has been in operation at the Sampson Station of the Observatory of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1957 February. It is similar in principle to the equipment of the High Altitude Observatory on which is based the contribution of the Warwicks [1] to this Symposium.

Procedures, instructions, and specifications demand precise and imaginative audience analysis. Although these three communications tasks ask an audience to participate in an operation, the specific purpose and audience of each is unique. Recognizing this uniqueness provides the technical communications teacher with challenging student assignments and the technical writer and editor with useful questions to ask in analyzing these audiences. This article describes the audiences that read procedures, instructions, and specifications, provides examples of each communication task, suggests assignments in each for technical communications teachers, and lists questions for technical writers and editors to ask about audiences of each task.

Lighting Research & Technology (LRT) is an influential journal in the field of light and lighting dating back to 1969. To celebrate its 50th birthday, the current study explored its bibliometric characteristics and mapped the bibliographic information graphically through VOSviewer software. This analysis found that the number of papers has steadily increased during recent years. The most productive and cited country was the United Kingdom. The most productive and cited institution was Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The most prolific author was Steve Fotios and the most cited author was Mark Rea. The journal most cited together with LRT was Leukos. LRT has become more and more international and interdisciplinary over the last five decades. Suggestions for the development of LRT are provided. Develpoments over the last 50 years have turned LRT into one of leading journals in the light and lighting field, one which has a bright future.
