Abstract The issues, problems and possible solutions involved in teaching a modern course on mechanisms and kinematics are addressed from the perspective of a professor and a student. A historical examination shows the value of modern (computer) solution of classical dilemmas. The structure of an introductory course is then presented, with comments on its educational attributes. The solution of several design problems with LINCAGES©, a computer software package, demonstrates the prowess of the modem student/computer liaison.

New discoveries about the Soddy circles of a triangle were published in the Gazette [1] in 1995; they are summarised below. Extensions of wellknown results in the geometry of the triangle to that of the tetrahedron were presented by Zeeman in his 2004 Presidential Address at the Mathematical Association Conference in York [2]. Using the computer software package Cabri 3D, we have discovered new results which extend the Soddy circles of a triangle to Soddy spheres of a special class of tetrahedra. This article is the first of two which present our discoveries, as well as relevant aspects of the established geometry of tetrahedra, together with their proofs.

Cranberry Crop Manager is a predictive software package for commercial cranberry growers. The package consists of linked modules. Predictive models for insect, disease, and weed development are the most important features. With appropriate weather and scouting information the models will make control or no control recommendations. To support the predictive models the program will maintain weather records of air temperatures, evapotranspiration, irrigation, and rainfall. Data can be imported or entered by hand. The program will maintain bed records including pesticide applicators, pesticide and fertilizer applications, and scouting reports. Output options include screen or printed reports or data export. An electronic encyclopedia of cranberry disease, insect and weed pests on CD will accompany the package. Minimum computer requirements are 486 CPU, 6 MB RAM, 6 MB hard drive space.
