The characterization of phosphoproteins requires highly specific methods for the separation and enrichment of phosphopeptides. Here we report a novel metal ion-immobilized solid phase material for the separation and enrichment of phosphopeptides. The material is uranyl-salophen-silica gel (USSG) particles in which salophen is a tetradentate ligand of uranyl ion. In USSG salophen is connected on the surface of silica gel and uranyl is bound on the surface through its coordination with salophen. Phosphopeptides can be selectively retained by USSG because uranyl-salophen can bind phosphate moiety with strong affinity and high selectivity. The new material USSG has been successfully used for the separation of phosphopeptides from peptide mixtures with the separation efficiency of 97.0% to 97.4%.

Reaction of [M(ppn)2]X2 (where M = Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and ppn = 1,3-diaminopropane) with formaldehyde and ethylenediamine in methanol results in the ready formation of a 16-membered macrocyclic complex. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, EPR, electronic spectral data magnetic moments and conductance measurements. The Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(III) complexes are coordinated axially with both pendant groups of the hexadentate macrocycle. These pendant donors are attached to the macrocycle by a carbon chain. The electrical conductivities of the Cu(II) and Ni(II) chelates indicated them to be 1:2 electrolytes whilst those of Co(III) is a 1:3 electrolyte in DMSO. The EPR spectrum of the copper complex exhibited G at 3.66, which indicates a considerable exchange interaction in the complex. Spectroscopic evidence suggests that in all of the complexes the metal ion is in an octahedral environment.

In situ formation of two cyclic (alkyl) (amino) carbenes (CAACs) followed by addition of BF3•Et2O provided the first two examples of CAAC–BF3 complexes: 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,5,5-trimethyl-3-phenylpyrrolidin-2-ylidene trifluoroborane, and 2-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-2-azaspiro[4.5]decan-1-ylidene trifluoroborane. These CAAC–BF3 complexes are robust compounds that are stable to ambient laboratory conditions and silica gel chromatography. They were characterized by spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. In contrast, a CAAC complex with borane (BH3) was readily formed in situ according to 1H and 11B NMR analysis, but did not survive the workup conditions. These results set the stage for further studies of the chemistry of CAAC boranes.
