Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel Rebecca provides rich opportunities for the study of imaginary narrative spaces and the language associated with such spaces. The present study explores the linguistics of the imaginary narrative spaces in Rebecca, drawing upon three lines of linguistic research consistent with a Cognitive Linguistic approach: (i) an interest in understanding and appreciating ordinary readers’ actual responses (rather than merely relying upon “expert” readers’ responses), (ii) the construction of worlds or “spaces”, and (iii) the application of ideas from Cognitive Grammar. The study reveals a surprisingly intricate interplay of linguistic devices used in the construction of imaginary narrative spaces and the maintenance of such spaces in extended discourse. The article presents the semantic history of the word flapper that denotes social stereotype of American culture. Being a multifaceted phenomenon of semantic cognition, a sociocultural stereotype presents a condensed and coded information that develops on the background of a cultural context. The semantic analysis from diachronic perspective sets up a correspondence of Latin origin of the word flapper with Indo-European stem that produced a number of words in Germanic languages. The cognate words of related languages reveal conformity of negative connotations determined by attitude to human weakness in different forms of its manifestations. This presumes historically determined negative connotation of the word flapper. The initial designation was motivated by kinetic characteristic of the object – a vertical movement. The meaning “a young and daring American girl of the 1920s” of the word flapper was semantically motivated. As it was stated, at the moment of designation, youth and immaturity of a girl were conceived of a fledgling image, that traditionally symbolizes inexperience of a youngster. The chapter examines the historical context in which the Press operated, not only within the political, economic, and social climate of late twentieth-century Britain, but also on a global stage. Beginning with a discussion of the Waldock Report of 1970, the chapter assesses the relationship between the Press and the University, and traces how the personality, education, and managerial success of each new Secretary to the Delegates affected this relationship as well as the operations, finances, staff, and publications of the Press as a whole. The chapter carefully assesses the Press’s role within the British book trade, noting the increasing professionalism of OUP staff and drawing a particular comparison with Cambridge University Press. Changes in structure, such as the closing of the Printing House, are discussed as are the opportunities offered by the global reach of the English language and the growth of higher education around the world.
