Three species of Dicranota Zetterstedt, 1838, new for the French fauna and updated list of Pediciidae from France (Diptera). Dicranota (Paradicranota) candelisequa Starý, 1981, D. (P.) capillata Lackschewitz, 1940, et D. (P.) pallens Lackschewitz, 1940, were collected during the all-taxa biodiversity inventory of the integral reserve of Lauvitel, in the Écrins National Park. This is the first mention of these species from France. An updated list of the Pediciidae from France is provided, with 35 species reported from this country.

The list of crane flies (Diptera: Ptychopteridae, Tipuloidea, Trichoceridae) known from Great Smoky Mountains National Park is updated. Sampling in association with the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory of Great Smoky Mountains National Park resulted in the addition of 107 new Park records, bringing the current list to 250 species. This species assemblage is much richer than those of surrounding areas, although similar in composition. Total richness is estimated to be between 450 and 500 species for Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited National Park in the United States, is home to a wide diversity of millipede species. A preliminary list of these species is provided, based on literature records and new collections from the All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory and the author’s research. This report establishes that the Park’s presently known fauna consists of 62 species (one of which contains two subspecies) in 21 families and all 10 orders known from eastern North America, and includes at least five new state records and 18 new Park records. In the near future several undescribed species will likely be added to the list, as well as described species that are currently known to occur near the Park, but have never been reported from within the Park’s boundary.Key words: Appalachian Mountains, ATBI, North Carolina, Tennessee, biodiversity, inventory, GSMNP

As a part of the All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Tennessee, North Carolina, U.S.A.) a collection of 192 specimens of Pauropoda has been studied. Eighteen species belonging to six genera in three families have been identified. Four of the species in Pauropodidae are new to science and described: Decapauropus arcuatilis n. sp., Stylopauropus plicatus n. sp., Donzelotauropus dividuus n. sp. and Donzelotauropus tenuitarsus n. sp. With the four new species the number of known species in GSMNP now stands at 49. A key is presented to the genera collected up to now in GSMNP.

During work for the All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) in Mercantour Park, in French Alps, 23 Limoniidae species were collected. Among them, three are new to French fauna: Dicranomyia (Dicranomyia) imbecilla Lackschewitz, 1941, Dicranomyia (Glochina) transsilvanica Lackschewitz, 1928, and Molophilus (Molophilus) priapus Lackschewitz, 1935. Altitudinal data and other results are commented on.

We describe two new scorpion species of genus Brachistosternus from protected areas of Antofagasta Region in northern Chile. Brachistosternus chimba n. sp. has only been collected in La Chimba National Reserve, in the Chilean Coast Range. Brachistosternus llullaillaco n. sp. is a high altitude Andean species of the Lullaillaco National Park. Both species were collected as part of the first survey of the terrestrial arthropods of the protected areas of Antofagasta Region, in the frame of the First National Biodiversity Inventory of Chile of the Integrated System for Monitoring and Evaluation of Native Forest Ecosystems (SIMEF) and Project FIC-R Recovery Plan for La Chimba National Reserve.

An online key and field guide is now freely available for the tardigrades of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). This project is the culmination of a ten-year inventory of the tardigrades in the park as part of the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (www.dlia.org). The key was produced using Lucid 3.5.2 (www.lucidcentral.org) developed by the Centre for Biological Information Technology at the University of Queensland, Australia.

Although the general ultrastructure of Cyanidium caldarium, an acidophilic, thermophilic alga of questionable taxonomic rank, has been extensively studied (see review of literature in reference 1), some peculiar ultrastructural features of the chloroplast of this alga have not been noted by other investigators.Cells were collected and prepared for thin sections at the Yellowstone National Park and were also grown in laboratory cultures (45-52°C; pH 2-5). Fixation (glutaraldehyde-osmium), dehydration (ethanol), and embedding (Epon 812) were accomplished by standard methods. Replicas of frozenfracture d- etched cells were obtained in a Balzers apparatus. In addition, cells were examined after disruption in a French Press.
