Children with complex medical issues often require a placement of a tube known as a central venous line in their major artery. The insertion prohibits such individuals from experiencing the physical and psychological benefits of water activities. This qualitative and quantitative study examined the swimwear needs of children fitted with a central venous line based on a user analysis using Lamb and Kallal’s (1992) Functional Expressive Aesthetic Consumer Needs Model of design attributes. The study was conducted in 3 phases: user analysis, design development, and field-testing. User analysis results revealed that the 7 participants (4 parents, 3 children) rated function as the most important design attribute, followed equally by expressive and aesthetic elements. The second phase produced a prototype that incorporated participants’ needs and preferences. Field testing concluded that the prototype fulfilled expressive and aesthetic needs but only partially fulfilled functional needs.

AbstractCentral venous catheters (CVCs) are prone to accidental removal during patient transportation. Of the casualties who require transfer between medical facilities, those with CVC in situ require additional vigilance to prevent loss of the CVC, which continues to occur despite various methods of fixation. The fashioning of a subcutaneous tunnel has become an integral part of the placement of central venous catheters. Several methods have been described, but the long-term CVCs in paediatric practice pose special problems, particularly that of the patients continually testing the CVCs fixation. Using a new polyurethane CVC, a retrograde tunnelling technique has been developed which affords immediate and secure fixation. We propose that this CVC, together with the technique of retrograde tunnelling, is the solution to inadvertent central venous line removal during patient transfer.

Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) Technology in combination with Interactive Storytelling (IS) enables the design of new kinds of technology enhanced learning and entertainment applications. The existing pedagogical research as well as the available Interactive Storytelling MAR (ISMAR) Serious Games are rather limited. This is mainly because of the difficulties of MAR applications development and the complexity of IS authoring. The paper works on the direction to improve this situation exploring the combination of a) rapid prototype development methodology based on MAR authoring tools and b) the definition of IS genres which could serve as templates and guide the ISMAR design. In the paper, key concepts are presented, existing successful examples of MAR Serious Games are analyzed in order to extract their narration genre features, available tools for MAR rapid authoring are introduced, and afterwards the design, development and first evaluation of a prototype ISMAR Serious Game is presented. The paper contributes to the bridging of learning design, IS, and AR technology research communities and facilitates feature interdisciplinary research.
