With the development of renewable energy, the grid connection is faced with great pressure, for its generation uncertainty and fluctuation requires larger reserve capacity, and higher operation costs. Energy storage system, as a flexible unit in the energy system, can effectively share the reserve pressure of the system by charging and discharging behaviors. In order to further improve the renewable energy utilization, the combination of wind power and energy storage for hybrid energy system is proposed. On considering the power generation characteristics, the objective functions are maximizing the system revenue and minimizing the system energy loss. Combined with the robust optimization theory, the model is transformed and solved. The results show that the application of the energy storage will effectively promote the renewable energy consumption, and the combination of the wind power and energy storage will achieve more effective utilization of the night-time wind power and cut down the total system cost.

Active distribution network with energy storage system is an important outlet for a mass of distributed renewable energy connected to the grid. In this context, a hybrid energy storage system is proposed based on NaS battery and lithium ion battery, that the former is the main large scale energy storage technology world-widely used and developed and the latter is a flexible way to have both power and energy capacities. The hybrid energy storage system, which takes advantage of the two complementary technologies to provide large power and energy capacities, is chosen to do an evaluation of economical-environmental based on critical excess electricity production (CEEP), CO2 emission, annual total costs calculated on the specific given condition using Energy PLAN software. The result shows that hybrid storage system has strengths in environmental benefits and also can absorb more discarded wind power than single storage system and is a potential way to push forward the application of wind power and even other types of renewable energy resources.

Energy storage system (ESS) plays a prominent role in renewable energy (RE) to overcome the intermittent of RE energy condition and improve energy utilization in the power system. However, ESS for residential applications requires specific and different configuration. Hence, this review paper aims to provide information for system builders to decide the best setup configuration of ESS for residential application. In this paper, the aim is to provide an insight into the critical elements of the energy storage technology for residential application. The update on ESS technology, battery chemistry, battery charging, and monitoring system and power inverter technology are reviewed. Then, the operation, the pro, and cons of each variant of these technologies are comprehensively studied. This paper suggested that the ESS for residential ESS requires NMC battery chemistry because it delivers an all-rounded performance as compared to other battery chemistries. The four-stages constant current (FCC) charging technique is recommended because of the fast charging capability and safer than other charging techniques reviewed. Next, the battery management system (BMS) is recommended to adapt in advance machine learning method to estimate the state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH) and internal temperature (IT) to increase the safety and prolong the lifespan of the batteries. Finally, these recommendations and solutions aimed to improve the utilization of RE energy in power system, especially in residential ESS application and offer the best option that is available on the shelf for the residential ESS application in the future.
