Ovitraps are generally used to collect immatures of Culicinae (Diptera: Culicidae). This study reports eight species of beetles found in ovitraps placed in an Atlantic Forest fragment in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. Seven species were classified in the family Scarabaeidae (subfamily Scarabaeinae), and one species in the family Hybosoridae (subfamily Hybosorinae). The first record of Canthon angularis Harold, 1868 in Rio Grande do Sul state is also documented.

This note extends the distribution of the dwarf cichlid fish Apistogramma borellii, and is the first record of the species, and the genus for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, suggesting that the fish diversity of wetlands, although relatively high, is still poorly investigated in southern Brazil.

Rio Grande do Sul (RS) is the southernmost state in Brazil and includes areas within the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes. The semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Gerromorpha) from RS are poorly known, with only 14 previously recorded species. We carried out two expeditions in this state, in 2002 and 2019, across 19 municipalities. Here, we provide new records for 19 species, of which 13 are recorded for the first time from the state, five have their distributions expanded, and one is recorded again from a same locality previously reported in the literature. Furthermore, 13 species were collected for the first time in the Pampa biome and one in the Atlantic Forest.

The African spider Cithaeron reimoseri Platnick, 1991 is registered for the first time in the New World, based in two females collected at Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Until now C. reimoseri was known only by the holotype from Eritrea. The species C. praedonius O. P.-Cambridge, 1872 was, until now, the only known species of the family with worldwide distribution and is considered prone to introduction in anthropic environments. Cithaeronidae are considered lower gnaphosoids being identifiable by the depressed posterior median eyes and the pseudosegmented tarsi.

Rhinella achavali is a large toad associated with lotic environments in Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Herein, we provide the first record of the species in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, extending its range approximately 200 km north from the previous records.

Abstract Herein, we provide new occurrence records of Scinax nasicus (Cope, 1862) for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. All new records here provide are located on Southern half of the state. Besides this, we provide the first record for species in Brazilian coastal zone. Those records improve considerably our knowledge regarding species distribution in Southern Brazil.

This study reports one specimen of Coryacris angustipennis (Bruner, 1900), a rare grasshopper, from São Francisco de Paula, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, extending its distribution over 1,800 kilometers from Corumbá, Brazil, and 1,300 kilometers from the type locality, Rosario, Argentina.

We report the rediscovery of the hummingbird Heliodoxa rubricauda (Boddaert, 1783) in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul after nearly 130 years without confirmed records. We captured 3 males and 1 female, and found 2 other birds (including an immature) at 3 sites in the municipalities of São Francisco de Paula and Cambará do Sul, in the northeast of the state. All records were at the top of the Southern Brazilian Plateau escarpment, at altitudes of about 900 m and near the southern limit of the Atlantic Forest.

Guerrerostrongylus zetta had been found in a number of different species of rodents from northern and southeastern Brazil as well as Argentina. Between 2008 and 2010, specimens of Oligoryzomys nigripes (n = 14) were collected and necropsied. The nematodes encountered were identified as G. zetta due their morphological traits. Prevalence was 78%, with a mean intensity of infection of 5.63 helminths/host. This report fills in a lacuna in the known distribution of G. zetta, and provides the first record of this parasite in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The first record of Riccia boliviensis and R. iodocheila for Brazil and the first record of R. squamata and R. subplana for the liverwort flora of the state of Rio Grande do Sul are reported. The species were found during a floristic revision of the family Ricciaceae in the state. Taxonomic notes, photographs, habitat and geographic distribution are provided for each species.

The first occurrence of Fritziana aff. fissilis (Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, is reported. The records were obtained near the sources of the Rio dos Sinos, municipality of Caraá, and extend the range of the species 140 km south from where it was previously known. The new records also represent the first time a species of the family Hemiphractidae is recorded in the state.
