AbstractIn the industry, generally, reserving actuaries use a mix of reserving methods to derive their best estimates. On the basis of the best estimate, Solvency 2 requires the use of a one-year volatility of the reserves. When internal models are used, such one-year volatility has to be provided by the reserving actuaries. Due to the lack of closed-form formulas for the one-year volatility of Bornhuetter-Ferguson, Cape-Cod and Benktander-Hovinen, reserving actuaries have limited possibilities to estimate such volatility apart from scaling from tractable models, which are based on other reserving methods. However, such scaling is technically difficult to justify cleanly and awkward to interact with. The challenge described in this editorial is therefore to come up with similar models like those of Mack or Merz-Wüthrich for the chain ladder, but applicable to Bornhuetter-Ferguson, mix Chain-Ladder and Bornhuetter-Ferguson, potentially Cape-Cod and Benktander-Hovinen — and their mixtures.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram ajustar e selecionar modelos de afilamento para estimar diâmetros a várias alturas e volume total, com e sem casca, de árvores de Pinus elliottii Engelm., na região de Caçador, SC, para estudar a forma dos fustes das árvores de diferentes idades. Ao todo, 78 árvores, com idades de 10, 18 e 27 anos, foram abatidas, cubadas rigorosamente e tiveram os seus volumes obtidos por meio do método de Smalian. Os modelos de afilamento testados foram os Polinômios de 2º e de 5º Graus e o Polinômio de Potências Fracionárias de Hradetzky. A função de afilamento que apresentou melhor desempenho para estimar o diâmetro com e sem casca ao longo do fuste das árvores foram baseadas no Polinômio de Potências Fracionárias de Hradetzky, para as idades de 10, 18 e 27 anos. O Polinômio de 2º Grau propiciou as melhores estimativas de volume total com casca para as idades de 10 e 27 anos e de volume total sem casca para as idades de 18 e 27 anos. Já o Polinômio de Potências Fracionárias apresentou melhores estimativas de volume com casca para 18 anos e de volume sem casca para árvores de 10 anos. Os fustes das árvores de Pinus elliottii apresentam melhor forma nas idades mais avançadas. AbstractTaper models for Pinus elliottii, at different ages, in the region of Caçador - SC. The research aims to fit and select taper models in order to estimate diameters at different heights and total volumes, inside and outside bark, of Pinus elliottii Engelm. trees, in the region of Caçador - SC, Brazil, as well as to analyze  behavior of stem form for trees at different ages. Altogether, 78 trees at 10, 18 and 27 years of age, had been cut and their volumes obtained by Smalian method. The taper models tested were the 2nd and 5th Degree Polynomial and the Hradetzky Polynomial of Fractioned Potencies. The best performance taper function for estimate diameters inside and outside bark throughout the stem were based on the Hradetzky Polynomial of Fractioned Potencies, for 10, 18 and 27 years of age. The 2nd Degree Polynomial provided the best estimates of outside bark volume for 10 and 27 years of age, and of inside bark volume for 18 and 27 years of age, although the Hradetzky Polynomial presented the best estimates of outside bark volume for 18 years of age and of inside bark volume for 10 years old trees. The stems of the Pinus elliottii trees present better form for the oldest tress.Keywords: Polynomial models; profile models; stem form.

Abstract Let 𝑚 ∈ ℕ, 𝑓 be a positive definite, integral, primitive, quaternary quadratic form of the determinant 𝑑 and let ρ(𝑓,𝑚) be the corresponding singular series. When studying the best estimates for ρ(𝑓,𝑚) with respect to 𝑑 and 𝑚 we proved in [Gogishvili, Trudy Tbiliss. Univ. 346: 72–77, 2004] that where 𝑏(𝑘) is the product of distinct prime factors of 16𝑘 if 𝑘 ≠ 1 and 𝑏(𝑘) = 3 if 𝑘 = 1. The present paper proves a more precise estimate where 𝑑 = 𝑑0𝑑1, if 𝑝 > 2; 𝑕(2) ⩾ –4. The last estimate for ρ(𝑓,𝑚) as a general result for quaternary quadratic forms of the above-mentioned type is unimprovable in a certain sense.

Abstract The reliability of salivary testosterone assays was evaluated by nine laboratories in four countries. Each laboratory used its own RIA procedures to assay samples from a set of 100 male and 100 female subjects. Agreement among the laboratories on mean scores was within the range reported by Read (Ann N Y Acad Sci 1993; 694: 161-76). Overall agreement on individual scores, as indicated by the intraclass correlation coefficient computed within subjects across laboratories, was r = 0.87 for men and r = 0.78 for women. Mean agreement between each laboratory and the combined set of all other laboratories (via Fisher's Z-transformation) was r = 0.61 for men and r = 0.58 for women. We take these latter values to be the best estimates of the average reliability of laboratories in their ordering of individual samples.

We have reviewed the observational data for ∊ Eri to derive our best estimates of luminosity, radius, temperature, composition, and age, as well as the uncertainties associated with each of these. These quantities are then used in stellar structure models to try to reproduce the global oscillation frequencies observed by Noyes et al. We find that we can reproduce the observed frequencies and splittings at least as well as the computations of Guenther and Demarque, yet for significantly different stellar parameters, most notably the age.
