Image thresholding and edge detection are crucial in image processing and understanding. In this chapter, the authors propose a hierarchical multilevel image thresholding method for edge information extraction based on the maximum fuzzy entropy principle. In order to realize multilevel thresholding, a tree structure is used to express the histogram of an image. In each level of the tree structure, the image is segmented by three-level thresholding based on the maximum fuzzy entropy principle. In theory, the histogram hierarchy can be combined arbitrarily with multilevel thresholding. The proposed method is proven by experimentation to retain more edge information than existing methods employing several grayscale images. Furthermore, the authors extend the multilevel thresholding algorithm for color images in the application of content-based image retrieval, combining with edge direction histograms. Compared to using the original images, experimental results show that the thresholding images outperform in achieving higher average precision and recall.

Image thresholding is an important topic for image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision. Fuzzy set theory has been successfully applied to many areas, and it is generally believed that image processing bears some fuzziness in nature. In this paper, we employ the newly proposed 2D homogeneity histogram (homogram) and the maximum fuzzy entropy principle to perform thresholding. We have conducted experiments on a variety of images. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can select the thresholds automatically and effectively. Especially, it not only can process "clean" images, but also can process images with different kinds of noises and images with multiple kinds of noise well without knowing the type of the noise, which is the most difficult task for image thresholding. It will be useful for applications in computer vision and image processing.

In this paper, a new method has been presented for the extraction of edge information by using Differential Search Optimization Algorithm. The proposed method is based on using a new heuristic image thresholding method for edge detection. The success of the proposed method has been examined on fusion of two remote sensed images. The applicability of the proposed method on edge detection and image fusion problems have been analysed in detail and the empirical results exposed that the proposed method is useful for solving the mentioned problems.
