Big Data in Railway O&M

Railway systems are complex with respect to technology and operations with the involvement of a wide range of human actors, organizations and technical solutions. For the operations and control of such complexity, a viable solution is to apply intelligent computerized systems, for instance, computerized traffic control systems for coordinating airline transportation, or advanced monitoring and diagnostic systems in vehicles. Moreover, transportation assets cannot compromise the safety of the passengers by only applying operation and maintenance activities. Indeed, safety is a more difficult goal to achieve using traditional maintenance strategies and computerized solutions come into the picture as the only option to deal with complex systems interacting among them and trying to balance the growth in technical complexity together with stable and acceptable dependability indexes. Big data analytics are expected to improve the overall performance of the railways supported by smart systems and Internet-based solutions. Operation and Maintenance will be application areas, where benefits will be visible as a consequence of big data policies due to diagnosis and prognosis capabilities provided to the whole network of processes. This chapter shows the possibilities of applying the big data concept in the railway transportation industry and the positive effects on technology and operations from a systems perspective.

The present spreading out of big data found the realization of AI and machine learning. With the rise of big data and machine learning, the idea of improving accuracy and enhancing the efficacy of AI applications is also gaining prominence. Machine learning solutions provide improved guard safety in hazardous traffic circumstances in the context of traffic applications. The existing architectures have various challenges, where data privacy is the foremost challenge for vulnerable road users (VRUs). The key reason for failure in traffic control for pedestrians is flawed in the privacy handling of the users. The user data are at risk and are prone to several privacy and security gaps. If an invader succeeds to infiltrate the setup, exposed data can be malevolently influenced, contrived, and misrepresented for illegitimate drives. In this study, an architecture is proposed based on machine learning to analyze and process big data efficiently in a secure environment. The proposed model considers the privacy of users during big data processing. The proposed architecture is a layered framework with a parallel and distributed module using machine learning on big data to achieve secure big data analytics. The proposed architecture designs a distinct unit for privacy management using a machine learning classifier. A stream processing unit is also integrated with the architecture to process the information. The proposed system is apprehended using real-time datasets from various sources and experimentally tested with reliable datasets that disclose the effectiveness of the proposed architecture. The data ingestion results are also highlighted along with training and validation results.

The age of autonomous sensing has dominated almost every industry today. Our lives have been engaged with multiple sensors embedded in our smartphones to achieve sensing of all sorts starting from proximity sensing to social sensing. Our possessions (cars, fridges, oven) have sensors embedded in them. The art of autonomous IoT has shifted from a mere detection of events or changes in the environment to dominant systems for social sensing, big data analytics, and smart things. Recently, sensing systems have adapted connectivity resulting in input mechanisms for big data analytics and smart systems resulting in pervasive systems. Currently, a range of sensors has come to existence, for example, mobile phone sensors that measure blood pressure at patients' figure tip, or the sensors that be used to detect deforestation. In this chapter, the authors provide a technical view upon which autonomous IoT devices can be implemented and enlist opportunities and challenges of the same.
