Vacuum circuit breaker is one of the major critical components that controls and protects the power system. The breaking capability of the vacuum switch directly affects the safety of the power system. However, the breaking capability of the vacuum switch is determined by the morphological characteristics of the vacuum arc images. In this paper, in order to research the variation of the vacuum arc, a high-speed CMOS camera system is used to collect the vacuum arc images within a short gap (7mm), the morphological characteristics of the vacuum arc images are extracted based on the digital image processing. At last, the variation of the arc is analyzed.

Abstract When the contacts of a Vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) with current flowing through it, is separated, an arc is generated. The Arc is usually supported by ionized gas or ionized metal vapour derived form the metal contact. This arc is an essential component of the interrupting process and capability of the Vacuum circuit breaker. The object of this paper is to trigger, record, observe and analyze the dynamic image of the Vacuum arc when it ignites in a short gap and at a low voltage. A CMOS high speed digital camera will be used to record the images of the arc. The characteristics of the arc in its diffused and constricted state, the degree of changes between the two states, and the direct relationship between the voltage and current will also be observed. The life time of the Vacuum arc will be 10ms

The processes of plasma formation in the anode region of a high-current vacuum arc discharge are of high actuality in terms of improving the switching characteristics of vacuum circuit breaker. In present paper the dynamics of the radiation spectrum of anode region was recorded with the system that allows time scanning of a spectrum. In parallel, there was high-speed videorecording. The obtained data clearly show changes in the charge composition of the anode spot plasma in the process of changing discharge forms.

Power system consists of the generation, transmission, distribution, and substation. All the power system component requires suitable protection devices as the protection system to protect the system during fault occur. In this paper, the circuit breaker has been selected as one of the protection devices in several applications. The types of circuit breaker that has been reviewed in this paper are oil circuit breaker (OCB), air circuit breaker (ACB), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) circuit breaker, vacuum circuit breaker, and DC breaker which are hybrid DC breaker and solid-state DC breaker. Normally, the systems or the circuits disrupted or damaged by the fault. To implement the protection system in the system or circuit, the type of faults and cause of faults should be known to overcome the fault. To provide the suitable voltage for the consumer, the substation is needed to control the voltage transmitted at high voltage from the generating station. Protection system is also required in a substation.

Vacuum circuit breaker becomes more and more complicated, integrated, high-speed and intellectualized. To insure vacuum circuit breaker in its good conditions, the function of fault diagnosis gets more important than before in the process of repairing. This paper is addressed a model-based fault detection methodology for vacuum circuit breaker. At first, the dynamic model of vacuum circuit breaker is built. Secondly, DTW algorithm is introduced to compute the similarity value between the test data and the theoretical data. At last, the value comparison between the similarity and the threshold concludes whether a fault has occurred or the vacuum circuit breaker has potential hazardous effects. The experimental results show that this method is effective.
