The issue of an adequate description, a conceptual formulation and a theological interpretationof the gift of the Lord’s Supper, has been a concern of Christianity since ancient times. Thecircumspect observation in the Charta Oecumenica (2001) reads: ‘Fundamental differences infaith are still barriers to visible unity’. In the light of those difficulties, attempts have beenmade in recent years to work on a ‘Joint Declaration on the Lord’s Supper’. All churches anddenominations face the challenge to bring that which they learn of Jesus Christ’s sacramentalpresence from the New Testament. Some rapprochements have been achieved in the lastdecades. Some of those results are discussed in this essay.

Abstract Defining appropriate attitudes towards sexuality has always been an issue in Jewish-Christian polemic. Contemporary Jewish writers tend to boast of Judaism’s liberal attitude toward sexuality, while medieval Jewish polemicists were defensive when confronting Christian attacks on this matter. In ancient times, when sexual puritanism was less popular, Jewish theologians did not refrain from showing their contempt for the Christian value of celibacy. This article proposes a new reading of the Talmudic legend about an argument between Joshua b. Karhah and a Christian eunuch. In this reading, the Christian figure stands for Origen, a Church father described in Christian sources as having castrated himself owing to a literal interpretation of the New Testament. In this reading, the debate summarizes the Talmudic rabbis’ perspective on the difference between Jewish and Christian views of sexuality.

Our intention in this article is to provide a study into this set of letters of the New Testament titled Catholic Letters, which, since the ancient times, has faced considerable issues in the acceptance and in the study of its corpus, and which constitute the group of letters of the New Testament that are the least studied or explored, even in our seminaries, colleges and religious universities in general, either Catholic or Protestant; we also believe that it would not be an exaggeration to say that the researches in this field are more common in the Catholic circles than in the Protestant ones, given the difficulties that the Fathers of the Reformation raised regarding the canonicity of some of these letters and the fact that, in the Protestant circles, the domain really belongs to the Pauline texts and not to the non-Pauline texts of the New Testament, such as Gospels, Catholic Letters, Hebrews and Revelation. Given the scarcity of documentation in this area, we believe that an illustrative article will help us go further in this field and extend the production of material in this area, in order to help advance our biblical and theological studies.

Among the New Testament writings the Epistles of St. Paul serve as the deepest theological source for elaborating the biblical doctrine of «discernment» (διάκρισις). Due to the variety and interrelation of the Greek terms representing this spiritual as well as cultural phenomenon, pragmatic intention of the Apostle is clear. Referring an appeal directly to the man, he constantly has in mind the mystery of God (μυστήριον), that was revealed in Christ. The «Gospel» of St. Paul focuses properly on an unexplicability of Godʼs plan: i.e. on the apophatic dimension of discernment as well as on an extreme openness of this plan in the apocalyptic context. On this background such important themes are stressed as: human responsibility, vigilance, perseverance, divisions (κρίσις). Between these two poles (immanence and transcendence, «already» and «not yet») dialectics of discernment is developing. The gift as well as the art of discernment is condensed in the Russian iconography of the «Holy Trinity» of Andrej Rublev. Within spiritual richness of this unique image resounds an appeal to strengthen brotherly relationships among Christians. It also discloses a deep dimension of the Godʼs judgment whose essence is expressed by the Trinitarian love of God towards a man.

In its effort to determine the historic sense of the New Testament records, and thus to understand them genetically, modern criticism has developed no instrument more effective than the method of comparison. In former days the aim was harmonization, because the interpreter started with the assumption of a mechanical agreement among the witnesses. Today the aim is distinction, because mechanical coincidence is neither assumed nor desired. On the contrary the broader the contrast in point of view, the surer the ultimate inference. Stars so remote that they give no parallax, their rays seeming to come at precisely the same angle no matter from what point of the earth's orbit the observer takes his measurements, afford small hope of determining their real position. There must be difference of angle when the earth has swung round half its orbit, or there is no basis for measurement. Fortunately for the problem of the historical Jesus, the rays which come to us from him do not travel along precisely parallel lines. On the other hand the problem is enormously complicated by the process of mixture; for the testimony of one witness has visibly affected that of another, detracting from its independent value.
