This chapter discusses some crucial notions to the interplay between cohomology and Chow groups, and also to the consequences, for the topology of a family of smooth projective varieties, of statements concerning Chow groups of the general or very general fiber. It surveys the main ideas and results presented throughout this volume. First, the chapter discusses the decomposition of the diagonal and spread. It then explains the generalized Bloch conjecture, the converse to the generalized decomposition of the diagonal. Next, the chapter turns to the decomposition of the small diagonal and its application to the topology of families. Finally, the chapter discusses integral coefficients and birational invariants before providing a brief overview of the following chapters.

Abstract Let X be a normal compact Kähler space with klt singularities and torsion canonical bundle. We show that X admits arbitrarily small deformations that are projective varieties if its locally trivial deformation space is smooth. We then prove that this unobstructedness assumption holds in at least three cases: if X has toroidal singularities, if X has finite quotient singularities and if the cohomology group ${\mathrm {H}^{2} \!\left ( X, {\mathscr {T}_{X}} \right )}$ vanishes.

AbstractWe construct motivic invariants of a subvariety of an algebraic torus from its tropicalization and initial degenerations. More specifically, we introduce an invariant of a compactification of such a variety called the ‘tropical motivic nearby fiber’. This invariant specializes in the schön case to the Hodge–Deligne polynomial of the limit mixed Hodge structure of a corresponding degeneration. We give purely combinatorial expressions for this Hodge–Deligne polynomial in the cases of schön hypersurfaces and matroidal tropical varieties. We also deduce a formula for the Euler characteristic of a general fiber of the degeneration.

AbstractWe exhibit a pseudoeffective $\mathbb{R}$-divisor ${D}_{\lambda }$ on the blow-up of ${\mathbb{P}}^{3}$ at nine very general points which lies in the closed movable cone and has negative intersections with a set of curves whose union is Zariski dense. It follows that the diminished base locus ${\boldsymbol{B}}_{-}({D}_{\lambda })={\bigcup }_{A\,\text{ample}}\boldsymbol{B}({D}_{\lambda }+A)$ is not closed and that ${D}_{\lambda }$ does not admit a Zariski decomposition in even a very weak sense. By a similar method, we construct an $\mathbb{R}$-divisor on the family of blow-ups of ${\mathbb{P}}^{2}$ at ten distinct points, which is nef on a very general fiber but fails to be nef over countably many prime divisors in the base.

Let C be an algebraic smooth complex curve of genus g > 1. The object of this paper is the study of the birational structure of certain moduli spaces of vector bundles and of coherent systems on C and the comparison of different type of notions of stability arising in moduli theory. Notably we show that in certain cases these moduli spaces are birationally equivalent to fibrations over simple projective varieties, whose fibers are GIT quotients (ℙr-1)rg// PGL (r), where r is the rank of the considered vector bundles. This allows us to compare different definitions of (semi-)stability (slope stability, α-stability, GIT stability) for vector bundles, coherent systems and point sets, and derive relations between them. In certain cases of vector bundles of low rank when C has small genus, our construction produces families of classical modular varieties contained in the Coble hypersurfaces.
