Creep of the bolted fasteners and gaskets is one of principal causes of plant leakages that lead to untimely bolt corrosion and failure of bolted flanged connections and other engineering equipment responsible for tight joints between adjacent members of pressure vessels, piping systems, reactors, steam generators, heat exchangers, and the like. Leak-tight flange design based on application of shape memory materials is experimentally studied. The preliminary results accompanied by analytical approach reveal that bolts and gaskets with insertions manufactured from shape memory alloys display significant limitation of operating creep.
