Based on the strong coupling and interval requirement of multiple quality indices, the interval-index-oriented optimization method is proposed to effectively realize the optimal control of alumina blending process. Firstly, the lexicographic interval goal programming model is built to describe the process requirements for quality indices. Then, based on the characteristics of the programming model, a kind of classificatory knowledge base is constructed by using the empirical knowledge accumulated in long-term production and the expert reasoning strategy is proposed to realize the optimal control of quality indexes with interval constraints. The results of industrial application shows that the proposed method can realize the optimal control of quality indices. It provides a good optimization mode for other blending processes of nonferrous metal production.

In this paper the development of an extension module to the IWA/COST simulation benchmark to include expert reasoning is presented. This module enables the detection of suitable conditions for the development of settling problems of biological origin (filamentous bulking, foaming and rising sludge) when applying activated sludge control strategies to the simulation benchmark. Firstly, a flow diagram is proposed for each settling problem, and secondly, the outcome of its application is shown. Results of the benchmark for two evaluated control strategies illustrate that, once applied to the simulation outputs, this module provides supplementary criteria for plant performance assessment. Therefore, simulated control strategies can be evaluated in a more realistic framework, and results can be recognised as more realistic and satisfactory from the point of view of operators and real facilities.

This article surveys findings from cognitive science research on expertise, with a focus on applications to the domain of simultaneous interpreting, including methods of knowledge elicitation that might be useful in the empirical investigation of proficiency at simultaneous interpreting. Defining features of expertise include its developmental progression, the nature of expert memory organization, and the nature of expert reasoning. I explore ways in which a number of defining criteria might apply to the domain of interpreting. With regard to knowledge elicitation, I explore three knowledge elicitation methods that sample the palette of available methods, specifically, a type of structured interview, a type of task analysis, and a more contrived or laboratory task.

Constructing highway pavements faces complex problems, which are affected by multiple factors, where solution is nearly impossible without expert assistance. Diagnosing such construction problems and suggesting most suitable cost efficient solutions requires significant engineering expertise, which might not be available in all construction sites due to inadequate resource and remote locations. Developing an expert system in this domain is a very effective way to help novice engineers to overcome these problems and to learn about them. Moreover, the system can be used as an archive to document engineering knowledge and to share expertise among the experts in this domain. This article describes the development and evaluation stages of such a system, including knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, system building, and system verification and validation. The initial knowledge is acquired from literature reviews. More expert knowledge is elicited through interviews and questionnaires. This knowledge is documented, analyzed, represented, and converted to computer software using the Visual Basic programming language and the system is called ES-CCPRHP. The system has been verified and validated in three ways: by extensive testing, comparison between system performance and expert reasoning, and case study. It can therefore be employed with confidence by end users.
