Utilizou-se uma seqüência de métodos combinados em amostras de melão, a fim de determinar o tempo de armazenamento deste produto. O fruto foi submetido a branqueamento, seguido de osmose em diferentes concentrações de SO2, ácido sórbico, cloreto de cálcio e ácido cítrico até pH 3,0. As amostras foram embaladas em sacos de polietileno e tratadas termicamente em banho-maria a 100 °C/1 min. Durante o período de armazenamento foram avaliadas as características microbiológicas e físico-químicas do produto segundo recomendações da International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods e da Association of Official Analytical Chemist. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a tecnologia empregada para este tipo de produto assegura seu armazenamento pelo período de 120 dias. No entanto o elevado índice de perda de vitamina C evidencia necessidade de otimização do processo.

The analyses for nutrients of Ipomoea cairica tuber were carried out and the phytochemical and proximate parameters were determined. The phytochemical analyses looked into the alkaloid, flavonoid, cyanogenic glycoside, tannin, phytate and saponin contents of Ipomoea cairica tuber while the proximate composition determination was aimed at the protein, carbohydrate, moisture, lipid, ash and fibre contents. The methods applied for these analytical determinations were mainly those of the Association of Official Analytical Chemist (AOAC, 2005). Each type of analysis (whether proximate or phytochemical) were carried out in triplicate and the mean values determined. The phytochemical analyses showed that Ipomoea cairica tuber had; flavonoid (1.52±0.03 %), Alkaloid (2.10±0.28 %), Tannin (0.05 %), Saponin (1.24±0.04 %), Cyanogenic glycoside (0.05 %), and phytate (0.02 %). The proximate analysis showed that Ipomoea cairica tuber had; Carbohydrate (11.7±0.1 %), protein (4.2±0.2 %), ash (0.6±0.1 %), lipid (0.51±0.07 %), moisture (72.7±0.2 %), and fibre (10.3±0.6 %). These results show that Ipomoea cairica tuber can be used as a substitute for other mostly consumed carbohydrate foods like yam and cocoyam.

During the period in which these papers were given, there were great achievements on the ecumenical scene, as the quest to restore the Church’s unity was pursued enthusiastically by all the major Christiandenominations. The Papal visit of John Paul II to England in 1982 witnessed a warmth in relationships between the Church of England and the Catholic Church that had not been experienced since the early 16th century Reformation in England to which More fell victim. The Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission was achieving considerable doctrinal consensus and revisionist scholarship was encouraging an historical review by which the faithful Catholic and the confessing Protestant could look upon each other respectfully and appreciatively. It is to this ecumenical theme that James McConica turns in his contribution.

Following four years of highly charged debate the rules for publication of scientific names of animals have been changed to allow electronic publications to meet the requirements of the stringent International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. In a landmark decision, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) has passed an amendment to its rules that will accept an electronic-only publication as ‘legitimate’ if it meets criteria of archiving and the publication is registered on the ICZN’s official online registry, ZooBank. Abstract As chest x rays involve risks of patients falling, radiologic technologists (technologists) commonly assist patients, and as the assistance takes place near the patients, the eye lenses of the technologists are exposed to radiation. The recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection suggest that the risk of developing cataracts due to lens exposure is high, and this makes it necessary to reduce and minimize the exposure. The present study investigated the positions of technologists assisting patients that will minimize exposure of the eye lens to radiation. The results showed that it is possible to reduce the exposure by assisting from the following positions: 50% at the sides rather than diagonally behind, 10% at the right side of the patient rather than the left and 40% at 250 mm away from the patient. The maximum reduction with radiation protection glasses was 54% with 0.07 mmPb and 72% with 0.88 mmPb.
