L’objectif de cet article est de montrer l’unité du chapitre 14 du Peri Hermeneias, chapitre dans lequel Aristote retourne au fondement de l’échange dialectique, à savoir la doxa. Je montre ainsi que ce chapitre expose progressivement les trois conditions sémantiques que des points de vue doivent respecter pour être contraires : le sujet doit être le même, l’objet (le prédicat) doit aussi être le même, mais le mode de prédication doit être contradictoire.

Abstract In his famous treatise “The ultimate scope in the explanation of the meanings of God’s beautiful names” (al-Maqṣad al-asnā fī šarḥ maʿānī asmāʾ Allāh al-ḥusnā), al-Ġazālī (d. 1111) presents a broad introduction on the concept of “name”. As is well known, the topic of the names of God represents an important moment in Muslim theology and mysticism. The argument uses philosophical concepts, starting from the discussion about the relationship between name and named subject. These concepts can be traced directly to the tradition of the commentaries on Aristotle’s De interpretatione (Περὶ ἑρµηνείας), which allowed al-Ġazālī to provide a logic-semantic solution to the identity between name and named subject, and subtends his indebtedness to the Peripatetic tradition.

AbstractLa première fois que SECUNDUM PLACITUM se présente chez Boèce, c'est dans sa traduction de la définition aristotélienne du nom du Peri Herméneias (I6 a I9): "Ovoμα μν oüv στ φων σημαντιΧ Χατ συνΧην...Ι qu'il rend: NOMEN ERGO EST VOX SIGNIFICATIVA SECUNDUM PLACITUM. L'expression y est le substitut de Χατ συνν qu'on interprète en général comme signifiant «par convention». En interprétant SECUNDUM PLACITUM de la même manière, on a l'avantage de faire correspondre parfaitement l'expression latine au sens usuel du terme grec. En a-t-on le droit? Ici surgissent deux problèmes connexes: Quel est le sens exact de Χατ συνΧην, quel est celui de SECUNDUM PLACITUM? Commençons par le premier.

In his Short Treatise and his Commentary on the Peri hermeneias, al-Fārābī offers two different but related accounts of indefinite terms and the propositions that contain them. In both works he presents a series of different senses that an indefinite term may have, commencing with a sense in which such a term would be equivalent to a privative term, and concluding with a sense in which it would determine the logical complement of the corresponding definite term. I offer an interpretation of this series according to which they reveal the workings of a fine analytical mind and a subtle teacher.
