The facts in your Jan. 4 page-one article "Folk Healers Stay Popular with Poor in Rural Southwest" would be very amusing if the healers would be able to limit themselves to patients whose ailments are terminal, psychosomatic or nonexistent. Unfortunately, people ascribe to the healers the knowledge to make a differential diagnosis between a curable disease and one that is not. What healers have in common is the capacity to manipulate people, and they use many of the medical, social or political resources for themselves and for the people with whom they interact. They take voters to the polls to benefit the candidates who share their views.

A new source of toxic lead ingestion has been identified roentgenologically in Mexican-American children and adults. Azarcón is an orange powder that contains 86% to 95% lead tetroxide (Pb3O4. At least three children have been treated with this substance by folk healers for relief of abdominal symptoms. Other Hispanic medical folklores may include this toxic "remedy."

Abstract This paper is about folk healers in Kalmykia, southwest Russia, locally referred to as medlegchi, and their eclectic healing methods that combine elements of the earlier religions of Buddhism, shamanism and folk beliefs with modern theologies, ideas and concepts. Although the paper focuses upon the contemporary situation of folk healers, the author also briefly describes the development of Kalmyk folk healing in order to explain its varied and de-centralised contemporary nature. Alleging to receive their healing knowledge directly from their guardian deities (the majority of whom are Buddhist gods), all Kalmyk folk healers are eclectic in their methods, some more so than others. For example, those who are members of the community Vozrozhdenie [Revival], discussed in the paper, differ from many others by the speed with which they absorb ultra-new ideas and anxieties into their healing practices, which today include UFOs, a cosmic god and aliens, among other things.
