The present paper will consider the influence of Masefield’s The Box of Delights on Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis himself openly acknowledged his admiration for and indebtedness to Masefield’s work, and the influence of the earlier novel is clearly evident on several occasions in the Chronicles. However, certain key differences in the two authors’ handling of similar themes and motifs reveal fundamental divergences in their attitudes to childhood and their vision of the function of children’s literature.

‘My Crazy Uncles’ was originally read at a meeting of the C.S. Lewis Society in June 1994, and later published in the New York Review of Science Fiction in November 1995. It provides a retrospective discussion on the speaker’s first introduction to science fiction through imaginary worlds in children’s literature. The essay analyses the conventions and tropes used in children’s fiction and describes the ways in which they work together to ‘convince’ the reader of alternative realities. Jones also describes her own joy of reading as a child and reflects on the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings series’ influence on her writing.

This article discusses some English classics of children’s literature that have made their way into Slovenian children’s literature, become part of the national canon, and can still be bought in bookstores or borrowed in libraries. Among these rank Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Treasure Island, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and The Chronicles of Narnia. The study also examines if the authors are fully acknowledged with the title of the original source text and if the translators names are given in the colophon.
