Aim: aim to assess the eustachian tube function before and after tympanoplasty. Materials and methods: The present prospective comparative study was conducted in the Department of ENT, Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur, Bihar  India .Among 60 patients confirmed with the diagnosis of chronic otitis media. Preoperative PTA and eustachian tube function tests were taken. Patients were then subjected to ear surgery. Results: Majority of patients were young adults the mean age group was 28.16±6.61 years. Of these patients, 55.0% were males and 45.0% were females. Mean preoperative PTA was 40.32±3.41 and post operatively the PTA was 31.41±4.65 improved significantly (p<0.05). Conclusion: The prognosis of middle ear surgery has a direct correlation with the Eustachian tube functions, i.e. good Eustachian tube functions is essential for obtaining a good prognostic value and vice versa. Keywords: eustachian tube functions, pure tone audiometry, tympanoplasty, chronic otitis media

Abstract Background Tympanoplasty is the well-established procedure for closure of perforations of tympanic membrane. Study Design This study was a prospective comparative study. Objective The objective of this study was to compare the hearing improvement and graft uptake rate between dry and wet tympanoplasty performed on tubotympanic type of chronic suppurative otitis media. Materials and Methods One hundred forty patients with tubotympanic type of chronic otitis media were selected and categorized into dry and wet ears. Tympanoplasty was performed using temporalis fascia by underlay technique in all cases. Postoperatively, graft uptake rate and hearing improvement were analyzed. Results The graft uptake rate was equal in both dry and wet ears, which was statistically insignificant. There was no statistically significant difference in the hearing improvement between the dry ears and wet ears (χ – 2.39, p = 0.122). Conclusion Factors such as age, sex, and status of the contralateral ear and wet ear did not have any impact on the postoperative graft uptake of tympanoplasty. There was no difference in the graft uptake between the dry and wet ears and there was no statistically significant difference between hearing improvement in both and wet ears.

AbstractObjectiveThe outcomes of dry and wet ears were compared following endoscopic cartilage myringoplasty performed to treat chronic tympanic membrane perforations in patients with mucosal chronic otitis media.MethodsPatients with chronic perforations, and with mucosal chronic otitis media with or without discharge, were recruited; all underwent endoscopic cartilage myringoplasty. The graft success rate and hearing gain were evaluated at six months post-operatively.ResultsThe graft success rates were 85.9 per cent (67 out of 78) in dry ears and 86.2 per cent (25 out of 29) in wet ears; the difference was not significant (p = 0.583). Among the 29 wet ears, the graft success rates were 100 per cent in 11 ears with mucoid discharge and 77.8 per cent in the 18 patients with mucopurulent otorrhoea.ConclusionThe wet or dry status of ears in patients with chronic perforations with mucosal chronic otitis media did not affect graft success rate or hearing gain after endoscopic cartilage myringoplasty. However, ears with mucopurulent discharge were associated with increased failure rates and graft collapse, whereas ears with mucoid discharge were associated with higher graft success rates.
