The new species Eugenia naraveana is described and illustrated here. It is only known at the windward slopes of Cofre de Perote volcano, and it grows in the upper tropical montane cloud forest. Its closest relatives are Eugenia sotoesparzae and Eugenia mexicana, but they differ from the new species because they grow in tropical perennial forests and coastal dunes, in addition to the differences in their morphological structures. This new species breaks the typical altitude range of Eugenia in Veracruz, Mexico, being registered above 2,100 up to 2,600 meters.

A new species of Myxia Bahder & Bartlett (Cixiidae: Cixiinae: Oecleini) is established as Myxia hernandezi sp. n. collected from native palms in cloud forest habitat in Costa Rica. Placement in the genus Myxia is supported by molecular analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S loci as well as morphological characters.

A new species of Myxia Bahder & Bartlett (Cixiidae: Cixiinae: Oecleini) is established as Myxia baynardi sp. n. collected from native palms in cloud forest habitat in Costa Rica. Placement in the genus Myxia is supported by molecular analysis of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S loci as well as morphological characters. Haplaxius delta (Kramer) was collected along the Caribbean coast as a new country record for Costa Rica. Based on morphological characters observed and molecular analysis of COI and 18S, H. delta is herein moved to the genus Myxia.

We describe and illustrate Philodendron guadarramanum, a new species of Araceae from Tabasco, Mexico. This species grows in montane cloud forest and evergreen tropical rainforest at elevations between 700 and 1100 m. It is similar to Philodendron purulhense, but differs from that species by having petioles broadly and sharply sulcate adaxially, with an acute medial rib, leaf blades with more basal veins and more primary lateral veins per side, and inflorescences more numerous per axil.

We describe a new plethodontid salamander species of the genus Isthmura, known only from one locality in the mountainous region of central Veracruz, Mexico. Like its congeners, Isthmura corrugata sp. nov. has a large and robust body, but it is easily distinguished from the other species in the genus by the absence of any spot or mark on the dorsum (except by dull reddish brown coloration on eyelids) and by extremely well-marked costal grooves separated by very pronounced costal folds. Based on an mtDNA phylogeny, the new species is most closely related to the geographically distant I. boneti and I. maxima but occurs very near I. naucampatepetl and I. gigantea on the eastern slope of Cofre de Perote, Veracruz. The region where I. corrugata occurs contains a high number of plethodontid salamander species and is threatened by human activity.

AbstractRevision of lichen herbarium specimens at DUKE revealed a species of thelotremoid Graphidaceae new to science. Clandestinotrema carbonera sp. nov. is characterized by an olive-green thallus, dense cortex, the absence of a columella, ascospores 15–24 × 5.5–8.0 μm with 3–5 transverse septa (occasionally submuriform), and the presence of hypostictic acid as a major substance. At present the species is known only from the type locality, an area of montane cloud forest near Mérida, Venezuela. Interestingly, this species appears to have been discussed in the literature once before, as an unnamed ‘Thelotrema sp.’ which in the 1970s provided the first instance of hypostictic acid isolated from a lichen. The previous report of C. leucomelaenum from the same locality is shown to actually represent C. pauperius.

Ixchelia kochii Cuevas (Violaceae, Rinoreeae), a new species from western Mexico, is described and illustrated; it constitutes the third species of a recently described genus endemic to Mexico and Central America. The species grows in ecotones between tropical subdeciduous forest and montane cloud forest. The species of the genus are compared, and their relationships discussed.
